I saw on the morning news today, that the results are now starting to come in on the effects of the oil on the marshes here. 80% of the blue crab larve were contaminated with oil. Of course, these are at the very base of the food chain. If this continues it's very possible that all the critters in the gulf may be contaminated for a very long period of time. I'm just going to sit down and cry.

Meanwhile, the crazies are at it in the “kingdom” wars.. Article in the paper this morning that the huge skimmer ship, A WHALE, (seriously) may not be allowed to be used because of fears that the effluent water may not be clean enough.. So the thinking is that it is better to pick up 2 barrels of oil and put very clean water back rather than pick up 500,000 barrels of oil and maybe let ten barrels go back in with the effluent water ! (numbers are estimates and may have been exaggerated by this writer) This kind of negative result enviro-think amazes me

I hadn't seen that

Yesterday the news was all about this monster and how much oil it could suck up in a day. Now their saying it can't put back 100% pure water. What the hell is the matter with these people. If it can suck up 500,000 gallons a day, and only gets half the oil out, we are still ahead of the game. The enviro wackos need to get off their head out of that dark place, and get some common sense.

Kind of like One Flew over the Cuckoos nest...

50% of something is way better than a 100% of nothing...whether it is money or oil....I would bet that the sewage treatment plants "overflow" more waste in a month, than this boat will produce during it's stay..

One word.....idiots,
all of them..

One of the bigger issues has been a LOT of theses ships have never been cleared to handle flammable fluids and all it takes to have another fireball and take out a few dozen people is one missing ground strap or really minor crew mistake

CYA, my friend, CYA.

I was in Slidel 2 days ago, trying to support the clean-up effort, but it's not easy to get permission to do ANYTHING.

The Gov. of Louisiana issued a letter some time ago, intended to make permitting and action quicker. A purely political gesture. The reality is that the Louisiana EPA is blocking all efforts to recycle the oil in the state. Though there are facilities, all of the oil/water mix is sitting in barges. One went to TX, one went to AL, and the rest sits in rented barges.

That is why BP had to go look for something like the Whale and that is why they may not get permission. Everyone is playing CYA and putting all blame on BP, while they should be focusing on the problem. A gallon on the beach is BP's fault, but a milligram could be blamed on the agency, oh dear.

There's also a movie called Idiocracy, I think we are already there. Then there's book someone wrote a long time ago called 1984. On the brighter side, I own a sailboat.

yeah...

I completely fail to understand some of the thinking here. We have a corporation which is criminally negligent in their practice from the very top on down. At every single step of the way, from the design of the well forward, the one and only thought was how to save money. They have a long, long track record along these lines, going back to that explosion at their refinery in Texas that killed 15 workers, as well as other crimes in Alaska. They spent $15 million in political donations last year (i.e. bribes) to be allowed to continue on their crime spree. They are now operating an even bigger and potentially more dangerous oil rig (the Atlantis) for which a BP whistle blower has reported that something like 90% of the mechanical drawings are either missing or inaccurate, meaning that if something goes wrong they won't know how to shut it down. (This rig pumps 100,000 barrels per day and is significantly deeper than the Deepwater Horizon.) The entire oil industry was able to so subvert the government regulatory body (the MMS) that they were allowed to self "regulate", meaning they've been doing whatever they please. Meanwhile, the cleanup crews are not given the safety equipment, most especially breathing equipment, that is needed. Some of them are told that if they want it, they must buy it themselves - this for workers who are being paid under $10 per hour.

And we are going to blame environmental "wackos"?

WANNA PLACE SOME BLAME FOR NO CLEAN DOG AND PONY SHOW--LOOK AT HIM.
same arseholigan dreamed up the fines for assisting those working the dog and pony show and restricted media coverage and flying over the spill. wow---is this in our best interest?? doubtful. just wants it to fade away so it isnt such big hot news..LOL.... donot allow them to make this spill fade from public vision--that will be sure death for the REAL clean up effort---has to be in view all the time......

these bureaucracy idiots arent helping anything--they are fun to watch until the reality of what isnt being done hits.........

Yes indeed. I've got another forum where I rant on political views...to no avail. Everyone has choosen sides, no one is going to change their mind. So while I have deep feelings on all of these issues, I choose here to concentrate on sailing...my new hobby.

It's almost a metophor, sailing both consumes effort and relaxes tensions, just what I need. I don't suffer idiots anymore. I'm done. That's not to say I'm turning a blind eye to the conferderacy of dunces, just biding my time, smiling and nodding.

The first casualty in any conflict is the truth. By the time we sort the rumors from the facts on this incident even the youngest members of this forum will have grey hairs on their chests. The size of this oil well is unprecedented. It has been flowing undiminished for 75 days. Besides this being an enormous expense it is an incredible waste of oil. BP does not want this to continue any longer than the people of the gulf coast want it. BP has invested millions of dollars to develop this well and the yield from it will probably be consumed just to pay for the clean up.

Of course BP wants the oil. But more than that, BP wants to avoid having to pay for any more than they have to.

As for that Whale ship - I looked it up on the internet. I don't know which "news" show said that its use may not be allowed, but I can guess. All the reports said simply that the EPA has to sign off on its use since they normally prohibit pumping toxic water (i.e. oil in the water) into the ocean. Thus, a perfectly reasonable requirement is made to sound like the product of "wackos". Simply diverting the blame from where it really belongs.

If a sailor is told that a deadly storm is coming and he blames the messenger and sails into its path anyway, that's his problem. But if we're all on the same ship together, it's all of our problem.

Your right John

The EPA simply has to sing off on the Whale ship. Problem is, they ain't doing it. This thing has been sitting in Venice, La. And sitting. If all it takes is for someone in the EPA to sign off why haven't they done it. The head of the EPA just recently, on public radio here, promised that this kind of red tape would be eliminated. I heard it said. So, now the red tape is entangling everything down here. And we continue to wait. And we all know that they don't work on weekends, or after 5. Never mind that locals are busting their butts, 24/7, using whatever they have. Plaquemines parish is broke. and the president of the parish just bought 50 shop vacs that attach to the tops of 55 gallon drums, out of his own pocket, so locals could go out and siphon oil from the marsh. And Fri. they came down with a new regulation that no one not employed on boat crews could get within 65 feet of any boom. The locals are the only ones who have been putting boom back when it gets washed away by seas. The internet is a fine place for research, but sometimes is just like the national media. Their only concern seems to be beaches, and photo ops.

Re: Your right John

I am not denying the bureaucratic methods of government bodies. My main point, though, is that some of the posts here seem to blame this for this disaster. It's like blaming the incompetence of the police force for a crime, rather than blaming the criminals. And to blame environmental "wackos" is really more than I can fathom. In general, they have been the ones warning about this sort of thing all along. (Incidentally, if we were mountain climbers and back packers, we'd be equally upset about the devastation of the tar sands mining in Canada, which is almost as disastrous as this oil gusher, only it's intentional.)
