Hi All,

I have a 1985 Macgregor 25 with the original trailer. I went to try and get the trailer registered but the DMV woudn't do it because they couldn't read the serial number on the metal label at the front of the trailer. Does anyone know if and where the serial number is engraved on the trailer somewhere else? Or any tricks to be able to read the one on the label better?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks--Kenny

If you know what the number is, I would go to Harbor freight and buy a set of number punches and stamp the number on it yourself, paint it over and sand off the paint, go back to the DMV, and say "Oh, there it is!" easier than arguing with them.

That sounds like a good idea! I do know what the # is since I have the signed title.

Thanks Sum,

I would rather find them if I can! I'll take a look there.

Hi Mr. Bill,

The boat serial number is okay and readable so I am good there. The trailer serial number is the one I can't find. I looked all over the trailer and the only one I can find is the on the little metalic sticker which is illegible.

Thanks--Kenny

I had to contact MacGregor with mine. I had the same situation as you with the MS DMV. I furnished them the original owner and boat serial number. I guessed that most of the MacGregors are sold as a combo and lucked out.

I misread the trailer part...

in FLORIDA, all you need is a certified weight ticket (reciept) to register a trailer. no titles on trailers here. (so they are very easy to steal, and re-register! -warning! )

if you can put the boat in the water, then go to a auto salvage yard where they have certified scales, pay the fee (~ $10), take the ticket to DMV and register as home made.

no one seems to care if it was not really home made...

might try that route...

Here's a pic of my '85 M25 trailer. The numbers and letters are bigger than any punch stamps I have seen.

Looks like mine and about the same place, except the 26S trailer is a little different in that are, but still right behind where the two side rails come together to makeup the tongue,

Here's mine on my '82 trailer. I took a photo because it looks like it's about to disappear. There are no stampings I can find.

You guys are overthinking this one...it's the DMV, they want to see numbers stamped on the frame, you give them numbers stamped on the frame. Paint over the area after stamping, grind the paint back off, so there is paint in the stamps but you can see the numbers but it doesn't look like you did it yesterday, they will be happy...it's the DMV.

Thanks for everybody's help on this! I finally found them--close to where they were in your pic but centered closer to the top or inside of the rail. They were hidden under two layers of paint and after vigorous sanding they appeared. Even so, some were barely discernable.

Thanks again!
