in my thought process i have narrowed it down to two choices at this time...the first name is....

"EVELYN LEE" .... witch was my mothers given name pryor to her marrying my father.....and as mothers go she was first my mother untill i grew older and then we became the best of adult friends as well ....some thing that is very rare in this world today.....

the second name is.....

"WOODY LEE" ....witch is my nick name and middle name combined ....i know that the second name may be a little on the egotistical side but i grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River and all the tuggs had male or female names and were very catchey......

so i am now looking for input from any and all to help me get to the bottom of this.....

....so dont be shy......

...... give me your thoughts on this matter as it is very important to me ....and maybe when i have read the feed back i will be able to make a choice .........

thanks in advance

regards

My thought

I think there is not much better than to name a boat to honor your mother. So, call me a sentimental slob if you want, but I love it.

I couldn't do that. Mother was in a convalesent center recovering from a broken leg and the young staff paraded into her room because they had heard that Faith Hill was a patient there. They saw Mom and declared that she wasn't faith Hill. Mom replied that she had been for the last 55 years.
So I can't name my boat Faith Hill

One good "test" of any name is to try saying it fast three times on the VHF. Like when you are sinking or on fire.

Not too long or needing any explanation, even thru a distant static-y reception.

Either name on your short list should work.

Clarity is sometimes under-rated, judging by the names I see on some other boats.
:)

Of course, you never know who is listening....

My top three names for boats, are Jedi, windwaker(a Nintendo zelda game), Disco Del Sol.
Another name I considered was Aei Sedi. Pronounced Eye-Si-dye. They are the female magic casters in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Some of them controlled the wind and were crew on tall ships.
Yep, I am a nerd.
I have zero superstition about naming boats though.

I always like a name that has a story behind it that is not completely obvious, but after a few explanations the person next to your boat goes Ahhhhhhhh that makes sense.

People will say ... Recess?

I say, my wife and I are both Teachers.

Ahhhhhhhhh makes sense.

I like when boat names need a small explanation and it is personal to the owner.

I like the idea of naming after your mother. I could not do that with my mother. Not Very Nurturing is not easy to say three times fast. People that know my mom would understand that is not an insult, she is very stand offish and always has been, but a heart of gold.

Well, to me given the choice, I would name it after your Mother and Evelyn Lee is a great boat name.

When my wife and I started looking for a new boat, we thought it would have been a Catalina 30. When I looked at them stern on, the first name that came to mind was Fat Bottomed Girl. Try saying that three times on the radio with out a giggle. Of course, after we stopped laughing and she realised the correlation that could result, she didn't think it was all that funny... even after I assured her that it had nothing to do with her. All of our friends at the club thought it was great name. As it turned out we never found the right girl.... Of course none of this has anything to do with your choices and both have a bit of a nautical sound... by the lee. cheers

Our friend named his Irwin 31 "Wanker". After hailing "Wanker, Wanker, Wanker" on the VHF someone came back with "you didn't really name it "Wanker" did you?" I couldn't help myself and answered "Yes Sir, it's a powerboat."

My wife vetoed several for me. Schalough Draught, being one and Slough Sleigh being another. Bietzpadlin she accepted.

I think "Evelyn Lee" sounds very elegant.

Now, would you put the name on the topsides, or just the stern?

first want to thank every one for the feed back on this subject.....

when i posted this i was almost certian of what the name would be .......

this has been a lot of fun for me reading the comments on here about the names .......

cant name it after your girl friend or your spouse as they come and go....

the one thing about naming it after your mother is that they are forever and one should name things like this to last ...especially if one is lucky enough to have had a mother that was also good enough to stop being your mom and start being your best friend in life as an adult ....knowing when to just be your friend when things get tough and not through pillows in front of you at every little turn you make in life......

soooooooooo "EVELYN LEE" it shall be .......

it will be on the stern for every one to see .......

cant do that untill i have her complete and as it stands now it will prolly be dec 2010 or jan 2011 before that can happen ....no hurry here as anything worth doing is worth doing right..... havent even started putting things back yet but the turning point is getting near still some removing and cleaning to do along with buying componets.... (shopping is such a learning experiance)......:D

Woody,

One more thought... if the refit doesn't go as well as planned, and
since you "grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River" ..
you might consider naming it ..
