Hi all,
Newbie w/ questions here. The gooseneck on the boom of my 73 Oday 22 slips into an enlarged slot on the mast, then is free to slide up or down in the groove that runs top to bottom on the mast. It's upward movement is restricted by the boom vang, and its lower movement is stopped by a cleat on the mast. Now with the main sail in place the boom-mast attachment is prevented from sliding up or down by the upward pull of the sail and downward pull of the vang. Fine. Question: If the main sail is reefed using roller reefing on the boom, the vang cannot be used, so then what prevents the boom from being pulled up and ultimately out of the mast by the upward force of the sail. Without the vang there is no downward pull or anything to prevent upward travel.
Is the cleat below the boom (the one that limits its downward movement) used to tie off the boom? That would make sense, I guess, but I don't know.
The Oday 22 Operating Instructions posted in this forum's boat Info section is such poor quality as to be useless, anyone know of a better source?
Thanks,
kpg
