I just got a new trailer for my Catalina 320. I have the deep (6'2" draft) keel so the boat will be pretty far off the ground when it is pulled. I'm looking for suggestions on how to adjust the for/aft position on the trailer as well as the height/angle of the 8 pads the first time I put it on the trailer. This trailer will be used for dry storage and bottom painting over winters and will not be for over the road use.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

I would suggest having her hauled at a yard with a travel-lift. They would be able to position the boat over the trailer fore and aft, then as they lower it, adjust the height and angle of the pads.

I have a shoal keel and did all the adjustment myself. Heck, half built the trailer too. I figured (guessed) that the middle of the keel at the bottom of the hull is the balance point of the boat. So, I centered that over the axles and adjuste the rollers up to the hull. My tongue weight is about 4000 lbs, about 7% of the total weight. So, I gusess I did OK. Since it's a full keel, I think slinging it is the way to go.

I agree with Mhartong, if you have a lift set her down it will be easier to do the adjustments. Tongues weights are VERY important and should be paid attention too specifically.

You need to check either your math or your typing. I doubt that you have a 57000 boat.

50,000*.07=3500

This was about a 30' boat that the guy pulled out with a flat bed truck. He Jerry rigged the supports while it was in the water and lashed it down. I took two trucks to pull it up the ramp. He cleaned the bottom and painted it. He also did some other repairs over the period of about 3 weeks. He kept the boat there in the parking lot for $7/day. Pretty gutsy but saved himself a bundle.

Unfortunately, the travel lift at our marina is for power boats so you have to drop the mast to use it. Another marina on our lake has a crane that can hang it on the trailer for adjustment and that will cost about $700 to pull/launch plus crane time and labor. I was looking for a cheaper alternative.

Find another crane company! Look in the yellow pages. I hired a sign company crane for $150 to put the engine and batteries in my boat. That was 13 years ago so it may be more like $350 today.
