What do people use to prevent having the load of the anchor chain from being transmitted to the windlass? What kind of item do people use to attach a snubber or line to the chain?

Lee's right, a chain hook tied to a short tail of line and onto a bow cleat works just fine. For snubbing chain when deployed, one friend of mine has a certain amount of chain which he always lets out and then 10-20 feet of nylon rode. Avoids the need for a snubber! They must tie a timber hitch differently downunder than the way I have made them for pulling logs.
You're right, we're misusing the term. It should say rolling hitch.

when i sailed a 40 ft steel ketch we cleated the chain off on the top of the simpson lawrence windlass....and in general, if water was 10 ft mean low tide we had out 80 ft.....didnt put any snubber on the chain--all was steel==i would tend to want to use my sampson post for the making fast of the chain then allow it to go to windlass..i would also want to use a length of line with a chain hook for reducing strain on my hull, esp, caprail...
