Galley Footpump Broke

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
While I was out cruising a the past few days my foot pump that pumps out the icebox in my Catalina 30 broke. I got back into port today and I just took the pump apart.

Inside the pump I located what broke. It is a plastic piece that goes inside of the pump. I am attempting to epoxy it right now with 5 minute epoxy (it is supposed to work well on plastic).

To replace the pump it would cost me $100 from catalina direct. Being that I know what is wrong with it I am wondering if I could just replace this piece that is broken but there is no company info or a break down of the parts.

The jury is out if the epoxy will work.

Anyone have any suggestions if the epoxy doesn't work?

the pump is "Gush & Galley Pump MKII."

why does it have to be a catalina pump....take the broke pump to a chandlery and see if you can match it up with another brand that will fit in the same spot ...or go electric with a momentary push button to operate it when needed.......

Thanks Stu...we will see if they respond. I will also let everyone know what happens with the epoxy. If I am really lucky this will work for a little while (until I can figure out if I can just replace the part or not).

The Epoxy didn't work. It didn't bond with the plastic. I was actually able to scrub most of the epoxy off.

I am wondering if JB weld would work or if I should try PVC glue since this is a PVC piece. Any thoughts?

I would like to get a temp fix because I am set to head out for a five day cruise starting saturday. Any suggestions are appreciated!

The jury may be out but the verdict is clear. No way; especially with the 5 minute stuff. If you read the label, you will see that it's not intended for immersion.

There is a great epoxy intended for plastic that has solvents in it. It smells like PVC pipe cement and works great. Even that probably wouldn't work in this highly loaded situation though.

You need a new pump or a replacement part.

This may not be applicable to this discussion but we do not use that at all because of the horrible smell that is created by water sitting in that line. Instead of putting ice directly in the box, we have a large square, hard shell inside cooler that we slip inside and use it that way. Everything stays cold much longer and I can take it our, refresh it all, then put it back. The kind of cooler we have is a soft outside with a top velcro slot at the top for easy access.

Unless we install a complete refridgerated unit, we are planning to completely remove the line between the sink and fridgebox but until we do it is blocked so NOTHING goes in there!

Besides, I hate that foot pump, I catch my foot on it way too often! :)

Get two clear one gallon plastic water bottles, fill them with tap water, put in freezer; two blocks of ice that don't melt.

freeze your drinking water in half gallon juice bottles and use those for your ice We put 40 pounds of ice in bottles in our ice box for a ten day trip and still had small chunks of ice in some of the bottles.. If you are getting condensate in the box then you have some air leaks. one pound of condensate will melt seven pounds of ice.

Stu gave you the link to the parts, it may not be sold individually. There are rebuild kits for these, but the cost is at least 1/2 the cost of a new whale pump.

Don't let this crimp you 5 day adventure.................................

Use a large plastic cup and bail it out.

if using epoxy on waxy plastic the only one that will work is g-flex. otherwise get the whale gusher parts--i have 5 pumps just waiting to be installed--i got mine used, at a marine swap-meet.......until you fix it--make ice at home and bring as cooler filler in your ice box on board---the ice maker can wait a minuet--i know ye wanna have all the comforts, but stuff always breaks in the middle of prepping for a trip...something about visits by murphy--goood luck--it will be ok....is ok to relax ---big deep breath and .......

Someday I am going to ask a water front store manager if I buy gallon jugs of water from him will he freeze them over night for to pick up the next day. A gallon of generic water is cheaper than 8 pounds of ice.

by doing it that way... your ice will last a lot longer in the cooler.....we used to do that when we would go to the Grees ferry lake in the Ozark Mtns....some things never change ...

I found an epoxy that will work for a little while. I found the kit to replace this part. So far defender is the cheapest at $20.99. I am irritated that defender has a minimum order of $25 so I will have to order something else.

I have a few half gallon milk jugs that I freeze. I find it is easier to put a few of them in there than the gallon milk jug. I still use bagged ice. Funny but on my last five day trip the ice box was actually set up for 6 days and I still had a good bit of my blocks left when I pulled them from the box.

I am heading out on Saturday!

I used all kinds of plastic containers to freeze water in for the ice box. The bonus is the cold drinking water as it melts. We used the liners from wine boxes - (which lie pretty flat when not in the box - so drink up), plastic jugs of water, plastic water bottles, and relatively little uncontained ice. In NY waters we didn't get a week of cold but a good three to four days.
Now there are concerns about those plastic containers ....

how long the ice keeps depends upon the insulation in the ice box walls and top.

speeking of insulation.........is the urathaine foam that is poured in better than the fiberglass that is wraped and packed in???????

as far as the ice keeping goes the block ice will keep longer than the crushed ice in the same ice box......

Fiber glass insulation can get wet and is then worthless. I changed the insulation in the door on my home freezer to 1.5 inches of foil faced urethane about fifteen years ago. the dood never has any condensate on the outside.

was the foil faceing out away from the cold or in to the cold ...or was it 2 sided foil faced foam.....

Three plies foil faced on both sides. I had to do it that way to be able to fit it into the door. There is a bent rim on the door that requires me to flex the panel to get it into the sides and then slide it into place at the top or bottom. I divided the length 60/40and staggered the joints and taped all the joints with aluminum duct tape.
