I have a 1985 lancer powersailer that is in great shape...but needs top deck refinishing. I have had quotes of 15k. I plan to use this boat for just about 3-5 years as an introductory to sailing (I am a newbie). There are no major problems with the deck except some surface cracks and discoloration. Is there a good sealing paint and method for a do-it-yourself job that will satisfy the short timeline and not cost me so much money?

If it's fiberglass, you can use arcrylic latex (or so I have read) I used an oilbased impliment paint avalible at wal-mart or tractor supply for less then $30 a gallon. I did not paint the non-slip treads for fear of making them too slick. It's all about prep work. after cleaning real good, and after a light sanding, wipe it down with gas or a good thinner, you want absolutly no oily residue left on it when the paint goes on. I would suggest for best look, thin the paint (agian I use gas) and apply with several coats. However, if you have any bad cracks or deep gouges you 'ought to fill these first - work the edges of the crack first and put a good sanding there (but not to gouge it out) then fill it.
Deck Paint
Home Depot and Lowes have a Urethane porch and deck enamel that should do a good job. It is also less then 30 bucks a gallon. You can also buy anti skid beads that you mix with the paint. 15K sounds totally ridiculous, for deck painting. I have a friend who had a Hunter 30 done. He had the bottom, hull, decks, and a new roller furler installed. I think the total was around 14K.

Interlux Brightside is a excellant product. I did my Deck last year and it gave amazing results. It's a apllied with either a foam roller or Brush and then tipped (read directions). The paint here in Canada is around $100 a gal and it is worth every cent. You must lightly sand between coats.

If you want to do it the best way. I would refinish your gelcote with a power buffer and a step by step preogression of polish from corse to fine. You can restore it to look new and it will be more valuble when you sell it. There is a guy on this forum who has a system down and can tell you exactly what to buy and exactly how to do it.
