GASP!!!!! the Amp hours
So Don, what kind of current does this thing draw?
If I keep my motor on all the time I can do just about any of the things suggested but it is a sail boat not a trawler.
Now if I had one of those Stargate zed-point devices.........

Not that much Bill, only around 5 amps (at 110VACV)..
It's great while tied to a dock and shore power and will keep ice ice for most of the day off the grid or until we get someplace and can run the generator (heaven forbid). I forgot one day and took off for a 40 mile trip not realizing it was still on so it kicked on the inverter and my 400 amp bank was not happy that night.
My son who races thinks I'm nuts - a popular opinion...

5 amps at 120 would be 50 AMPS!!!!! at 12 volts

My son is the sailor, I'm just lazy. After that day sail with the ice maker running off the inv, my battery monitor has a sad face on the display. I think the digital message display said something about the idiot running the boat.

Don't forget... this IS their home. They packed up two households and moved aboard. This isn't an afternoon or weekend cruise. This pic was taken somewhere out in the Pacific 9 days from their previous stop in Mexico. So why not enjoy a few luxuries now and then. I know they've been through a couple of good storms and not so "grand" meals.
He runs a watermaker off a genset, whenever he has enough power etc.

That fine china you cannot take to the grave with you so you may as well use it for as long as it last. Keep some contact cement handy and them pieces may oultive you.

I'm just jealous. I don't have a genset but think I could buck up to having one. It would be hard but I'm pretty sure I could do it. I'm willing to try. The wife is piping in that she thinks she could stand having a genset too.

My wife and I are both teachers with summers off. Florida in the summer..... AC on the hook is a survival necessity when it is 95 degrees at 11 pm and the humidity is above 100%. The heat in the air is thick enough to cut with a knife. We have an outlet timer so that the air only comes on for an hour and off for an hour. The Honda runs extremely low when there is no load and barely sips fuel. Our club members think we are insane to pack up the sailboat on the trailer and head for mid Florida coast. The gen set makes for great summers in the heat. It also allows us to have anything.... anything on board.
China? wtf? Everybody's all surprised about the china and to a lesser degree the presence of a toaster. Day 9 of 14 and the fresh food is what gets me. That amount of smoked salmon, and capers looks like what my wife and I put out when there are about 6 or 8 people dining, cream cheese looks about right for a shoreside party of two or three.
Unless this is the one day where they put out a photo op spread, imagine the space it would take in the fridge for 13 of these breakfasts. then triple or quadruple it to accommodate lunches, dinners and the inevitable snacks and night lunches. Once those capers, the salmon and the cream cheese are out in the cockpit in the open air on serving dishes you don't think this couple puts any of it back in tupperware do you? My first mate shops for an overnight and my fridge is full.

Ok... I do aspire to a boat big enough to have some china or crystal on it. We do have some fine crystal and china at home, but even so it only gets hauled out a few times a year.
Til then, we happily use some quite decent non-breakable dishes we found at a dollar store, and some short, wide stainless steel travel mugs. And proper cloth napkins.

Gotta love it- a fifty foot boat has the power and resources for very civilized cruising. A very nice breakfast, or any meal, is a great attitude adjuster. I think the coffee pot is not a pot, but a a carafe. I like my Maker's Mark from a nice glass, with ice, but don't have an ice maker (our Bene has a freezer, but we don't run it as a freezer, it's more of an ice-box, and we run the separate refrigerator as a fridge). I say Rock On!
Captain Morgan's Private Stock requires only a flask. In fact, it's a faux pas to drink it any way but straight out of the flask. We have our own brand of style and grace.
I say good on them. I'd like to have a 50 footer with all the amenities. Heck, if anyone was asked to join them, who among us would say "no... i'll have my canned tuna and crackers for breakfast" or "Why no, I'm rather partial to my powdered milk and grape nuts."

Several years ago, I installed an EdgeStar 1.5cuft Medical Freezer on my boat for use as an ice maker and a second freezer.

It will go to -20F and freezes 8 trays of ice solid within a few hours. At 67 watts, AC, it draws about .6 amps (AC) from my inverter. It's been working great; is easily handled by my inverter, and is insulated well enough that contents will stay below freezing up to 24hrs while I sit at anchorage w/ my inverter Off.... And it only cost about $200
