Leaking Hurst HBW-50 seal

I am hulling my Catalina 28, doing the bottom, and replacing the cutlass bearing. I think my Hurst HBW50 transmission is leaking a little fluid through the rear seal. Is it hard to replace the rear bearing if I already have the coupler removed? Thanks

I think, if I am remembering correctly, the gear box case needs to be split in half to replace that seal and you may need special tools to press the rear bearing off the output shaft..

Unless you hit the seal with penetrating oil or the motor was out of alignment it may just be over filled. Make sure it is not coming from the vent hole in the filler plug..

Good point. The reason for potential overfill is this: during the winter the transmission should be filled up for winterizing. But for normal use there should only be a relatively small amount of fluid inside the housing, like just short of 10 oz. So, don't forget to "empty" the Hurth after the winter for use.
