Eye Splice In Double Braid

I must be dysfunctional. I just pulled apart my latest eye splice for the third time to start over. I am also on my third glass of wine. Maybe there's a convergence? Anyhow, I've only done a whole bunch of these over maybe 40+ years, and still it's like I've never done one before each time!:cussing:

Just a suggestion

Try my magic splicing tool. I have used this tool for dozens of eye splices and have never messed one up yet. I have also received testimonials on the greatness of he tool from others on this forum that have tried it. Don't waste more line with these rotten tools from others. The magic splicing tool is where it is at.

i use a screwdriver or a marling spike----the screwdriver can be either blade or phillips head...either will get the job done!!

I suggest buying Brion Toss' DVD on splicing (and his tools). You'll save the cost by not wasting as much line in failed splices....

I'd recommend lock stitching and whipping the eye splice. The problem is that if an eye splice is too small for the attachment it will be used on, the lateral forces on the eye's spliced section can cause it to fail.

If you're using a 6" eye splice around a 4" mooring bitt, then chances are much better that it will fail than if you use a 10-12" eye splice around the same 4" mooring bitt, since the spliced section is under much greater lateral loading than with the larger eyes.

Eye splices especially are one of those things I just can't seem to do without the step by step directions- even when I do 4 or 5 in a row. Maybe it is some sort of spatial disability. I figure I have done more than 35 of them over the years of sailing. I dunno- maybe not enough wine

I second the Brian Toss idea. With the DVD, the rigger's kit, and HIS magic splicing wand it is a breeze to splice double braid.

what size line are you splicing?
I am going to make some lazy jacks with 1/4" and would like to splice instead of tie the ends. I hear small line is tough to splice though.

I'm doing 3/8 line for my traveler control line. I'm gradually replacing the running rigging and the control line is a bit fuzzy. I'm color-coding as I go. I have also spliced a lot of 5/16 but nothing smaller. I use the Sampson fids, but have also cut up a lot for projects, finding them handy at times. They are getting expensive, so I doubt I'll be doing that again. 1/4 inch sounds small, but there is noting to lose by trying.
Anyhow, I guess I just had a mental dysfunction, or the wine made my eyes cross. I'll park it for a while and do it again later in the month when we go to Catalina following a trip to Alaska (...on a cruise ship).
I actually have one of Byron's videos somewhere. I didn't by his handy tool tho. I watched a couple of u-tube videos and they helped. I have my old Sampson guide with my notes scratched all over it, but I still screwed up this splice royally.
I'm going to have a glass of wine (or maybe whine..). Thanks for all the suggestions.

Eye Splice Success

OK, I figured out what the problem was. Whenever I've done eye splices before, it was with beer; not wine. Sure enough, the next time I tried it, I nailed both splices in only 25 minutes and one beer. Clearly, the problem was my choice of beverage!

Use the search function. I posted a picture and instructions a few years ago. It is made from a common household wire coat hangar, or for smaller line you can use any stiff wire. It is almost free and works way better than any tool I've ever seen or tried. I have made dozens of splices with it and am amazed at people selling 15 dollar tools that completely stink in comparison.

Honestly, tie a stopper knot and skip the splice. When the line works in a bit of twist over time, simply give the bitter end a twist and it's gone. Strength is not relevant.

I use Aunt Mart's knitting needle(wife claims its hers...never seen her use it) down to a 1/4" and a brazing rod for 3/16" with a little electrical tape. Biggest secret weapon is nitritask work gloves made by North. Helps slide/milk cover over core.
