Pulpit Stanchions Removable???

I'm pondering a mod to my boat to add a more substantial deck plate at the bow in order to also add a new bow roller. The pulpit stanchions don't have a mounting plate, but go straight into the deck.. Anybody know how are they attached, and if the can be removed (Easily ... no hacksawing / no welding !!!!) ??

below deck, the stanchions are sandwiched between the hull and hull liner ... doesn't seem to be any access.

does Hunter (or anyone else) actually make these things so you have to rip open your liner to get at them?? What if they were damaged???

They probably have a plate welded on the end and were then sandwiched in the laminate. Easier and cheaper to manufacture, not so easy to work on or replace. Your bow roller doesn't have to come off the very point of the bow, you can place it any way you like, but a goofy-looking bow roller may put off any future buyer should you want to sell and move up. If you're anchoring in a lake without strong current, you probably don't need a roller, especially if you don't use an electric windlass, and with 32 ft, I wouldn't think an electric windlass would be necessary if you're not using an all-chain rode, which, again, you wouldn't need in a lake, unless you've got killer winds, in which case maybe you shouldn't anchor there anyway. TBLI, not sure you need a work-intensive piece of gear the manufacturer didn't install, but it is your boat, so...

Isn't that bow roller too big for the space you have, you can't cover your chain locker? I don't see how you are going to mount it. They have shorter ones that consist of basically the roller itself.

I installed upgraded ground tackle on my boat, including a bow roller, larger bow chocks, larger cleats, a bow roller and a manual windlass. While this might be overkill for most boats, I thought it was a necessity to have decent ground tackle and ground tackle handling gear.

Larry is probably right on how the bow stanchions are mounted.... and it really does suck in terms of user access, but doesn't mean you can't do something about it. The other problem you will have is the fact that your anchor locker appears to be right up against the bow pulpit, unlike the one on my boat. There's not solid deck area to mount the bow roller to, much less bigger cleats and such.

If you'd like to see a photo of the ground tackle setup on my boat, let me know.

Bow Roller Mod

Guys ... thanks for the input!

Larry ... I sail based on the Hudson River .. tides, currents, winds, hurricanes (once in a blue moon ;-) ). Also will be heading to Long Island Sound and off the coast of New Jersey this summer. I just got a Manson Supreme and am looking to keep it on the bow.

Gary ... yes, the chain locker is problematic ... was thinking about re-working the lid so that the forward few inches get fixed in place. Then I could mount a reinforcement plate to the walls of the locker and under the fixed part of lid to support the roller.

SD ... would love to see pix of your mod ...

Can I assume that you DID NOT have a bow roller on the boat as it was delivered from the factory?

Steve ... got a good friend in my "yacht" club who does stainless steel welding and fabrication ...

If I used the original bow roller, the Manson would be imbedded about 6 inches into my bow - film at 11

Ron, the bowroller in the first picture will not work for this boat... IMHO you should consider another solution, rather than tear up the foredeck trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. If you considered mounting and storing the anchor on a pulpit bracket you won't have to make any modifications at all. BTW where do you cleat off the rode?

Joe .. the pulpit bracket sounds interesting .. however being new at this I'm not too familiar with them ... is this a bracket you can buy off-the-shelf for a particular make of anchor or are they all pretty much custom??? Got any pictures?? I need to add cleats and other hardware.
