Did any of you guys do the Newport Beach to Ensenada BC race this year?

There were 217 boats entered in 2010, down a third from 09 which itself was down a third from 08. (The economy, passport requirements and fears of drug-gang violence all contributed) I raced in non-spinnaker A cruising class. There were 26 boats by one of my crew's count. I finished mid pack on handicap, 9th or 10th I think and third on elapsed and corrected before motoring penalty.

In the cruising class, you are permitted to motor from 2000 to 0800 with a correspondingly large penalty applied to your handicap result. This adds another tactical component that is a PITA in some respects. The deal is to get the cruising boats to the finish in some respectable time, and it works well to that end. The PITA is that you don't want to be doing .05 knots with the sails banging themselves to death and then lose out vs. motoring penalty to boot. It's basically something under 1.5 knots for me. However, the tough call is that in ultra light conditions in a current, it's hard to power off and get a feel of wind until the boat settles in which takes at least a half hour or more.

This year, we had a good start, maybe third across the line and worked our way up the fleets starting ahead. We were the last class started which makes life a bit easier in the start area. Anyhow I noticed there we a lot of brand-new sails and gear in the cruising class and some really well sailed boats which made it very interesting. The first six or eight hours was a beat and there were a lot of shifts, so it was a helmsman's battle. The crew had a break.

I think a couple of us who were among the class
leaders had the same experience of sailing into a hole about 0300 and powering out while those behind had the benefit of reaching the same point and having it fill in, thereby avoiding motoring or less of it. Such is luck in a regatta.

We had a great time in Mexico altho my heart goes out to all the businesses who are really suffering. The exchange rate is as favorable to the dollar as it has been in years, making already good deals even better. We stuffed ourselves with great food for three days and may have had some liquid refreshment too. Our wives look forward to getting us out of town and plan their own projects and recreation.

So, I would encourage west coast sailors to give it a try if you have not already. The race is sponsored by the Newport Ocean Sailing Association at www.nosa.org There is some stuff you need to do first, such as belonging to an SCYA member club. The good news is that there are some very inexpensive clubs if you do not belong to a yacht club and don't want to. You need a PHRF certificate and sail number which is just a matter of a form and a couple of bucks. And, a US Customs sticker which can be had online. Feel free to send me a PM if you want some info.

This is a great experience and really tunes up you sailing and boat. I'd urge you come out and try it next April!

Just out of curiosity, what's the smallest boat to compete?

Hi Rick, Glad you had a good time. I've done NP-E many times and you just described a typical race scenario (lots of bobbing at night) but it can be windy the whole way too. The biggest reason for the dropoff is that another regatta - The Border Run - is scheduled at the same time. It also starts from Newport and ends in San Diego rather than continue to Ensenada. Also, some folks simply don't want to spend $ in Mexico given the increasing problems at the border. But, either is a fun race and I agree with you, would encourage people to try either race.

Smallest Boat

Just out of curiosity, what's the smallest boat to compete?
I think 25; I know there was a 25 in it. The race committee will consider smaller boat individually as I recall.

I've done that race many times, and more often than not, it's a no-wind bust. We end up motoring back into Newport from somewhere off Oceanside, anchor at the Lido anchorage and drink all the booze.

We did the Ensenada race in 2008, 3 couples, on a Jenneau and had a great time. Last year did the Border Run in our 30 Catalina and had a great time with 2 couples. We won our Cruz non spin class and learned alot about difficult finishes in the dark!

I am really frustrated by the negativity about the Border Run taking away Ensenada racers. It is a race that over 100 boats participated in who would NOT have considered going all the way to Mexico...for many reasons: size of boat, number of crew, distance, fear of the drug problems in Mexico right now, etc. There are issues and bad blood between the races, but us regular guy racers should let them fight it out and just enjoy the fact that we have choices and enter as many as we can. It will be worked out in a couple years and afterall, when you think about it, almost 500 boats participated that weekend and multiply that by crew, it was a wonderful time for a lot of people, from 14ft Cats to middle of the pack 30 catalinas to the fastest sleds....... isn't that something to celebrate?

Good point, Luz. I think most of the flack is from the serious maxi & multihull guys. Everyone else just sorts themselves out and does one or the other. For my part, I do a MDR to SD race every year. I have six trophies from it over the dozen years. There are some other SD races as well, so I have plenty of opportunity, but only a couple for Mexico. And, the competition in the cruising classes is large and pretty sharp, so it's the one for me. We've taken two seconds and a first in the five years I've done it, so the candy keeps me going too. Regardless, as several have pointed out, the more important point is get out on the water and do some of these which will stretch you a bit and provide some fine bar stories.

oh we agree! I look forward to doing Ensenada again. The previous owners of our boat won their class in Ensenada about 7 years ago (name was White Cat ll) . I think we might take our boat when things get a bit calmer and we get more experience. The Border Run was our first in our boat so we were pretty pleased to do so well. I love stretching ourselves and we are doing that at a good pace. Congrats on your wins btw.

It is such an interesting race (Ensenada) getting the right combination of motoring time or not......... we did have ours on for too long in 2008 to do better than mid pack in the standings, but it allowed us to get in by about 4pm vs so many that got stuck in the bay until 2am! Most of them were not far behind us but missed what wind there was.

Anyway, racing is such a great experience and all the bar stories and great food, we miss alot, so we will do it again....... Hope the merchants can hold on, they are so great, hate that they are going through all of that.

Pretty Photo From Ensenada Race

Here's a photo of 'Attitude Adjustment 2' battling the Catalina 42 'World' early in the race. It was a great dual with both boats in the same class and rated the same; we played the shifts and covered each other for two or three hours until World went outside. We finished within two places and 20 minutes on handicap which isn't bad for 125 miles.
