Just one, let a pro do it!

Getting thirty-seven feet of stripes to lay down and look straight was a major task. I had ordered more than required so was able to try about six feet. When I realized how hard that was, especially without a real and long scaffold, I turned it over to a professional.

Well, now that I see the picture I guess it was more than six feet. The waviness doesn't look too bad here. This was all removed by the pro. Then I cut the bottom two stripes off of the roll and went with three instead of five. The bottom two were just too thin.

Bribe someone to help you with a few beers as payment. Of course the beers must be consumed after the striping is done ;).

Take something like a compass with a blunted end and a pencil and set the spacing from the rub rail to the top of your stripes. Draw the the pencil line from stem to stern. I used the measurment to the top of the stripes because it was easier to see in my case. I did this on my Oday 23 from a leaking [air] rubber raft and it turned out great. This was not a hard job.

Or you could use a speed square.

Would a laser level work?
Would work great if you wanted your stripes to be perfectly straight. So if the stripes are close to the water line or boot stripe, it might look esthetically pleasing. However, the further up it goes towards the rub rail it will look awkward. Most I've seen that are below the rub rail tend to bend up towards the bow.
