I am very intrested in the O'day 222's but I can't seem to find any information on what the differences are between the years they were built and which ones are the most prefered. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

I am a recent owner of a 222. I don't know much but pre-1984 they were model 22s. In 84-89 they built the 222 model with the overall difference in being a fractional jig sail. I guess easier to sail. Also the interior layout in the 22 was more compartmental where as the 222 was all open.
You might find more info in the boat info > owner modifications > look at the 22 info and then the 222.
Most people agree that the 222 is better than the 22, I guess for it being more modern and updated. In the end, find a good example boat and go sailing.

I don't think that the older O'Day 222 differ all that much from the newer ones Mike. Some of the older ones appear to have brown interior mattress coverings, and the newer ones had Navy Blue with white fleck design. Some of the older 222s had now tension bar in the cabin to support the mast. This is not a big thing because one can be made and installed. If you can find an O'Day 222 in good condition you should consider scooping it up because they are pretty rare and hard to come by. They only built 300 of them in 1986 at the Fall River O'Day factory, and possible 300 were built on the West coast that year according to Rudy at D&R Marine. He has a large book on all the facts on these boats. O'Day also built some O'Day 22s with a keel/centerboard that were pretty nice boats also. I'm not sure about this, but I think that the winches were on the combings of these boats whereas, the 222s and 192s had them located on the cabin. I prefer winches on the combings myself for easy single handed sailing.
