O'day 22 thru hull fitting - aft

What I found, however, was that the flange backing the thru hull seems more or less completely inaccessible without cutting my way to it. I think the thru hull might be attached to a hose suspended by hose clamps, but I'm just taking a guess after looking in there with a flashlight.

Does anyone have any other bright ideas about how to access the thru-hull from behind?

Are you talking about the thru-hull for the cockpit self bailing hose? If you are, I really don't know much about how the O'Day 22 is set up and I'm sure that it's a lot different than my O'Day 222. What you can do is cut in a deck plate on the inside and you're going to have to decide where to cut your hole. I cut one out in the center of my inside transom years ago and it was the best move I ever made. It allowed me access to my self bailing hose, gudgeons, and electric cable from my outboard.

If you've ever got your body stuck in the Lazarett hatch while trying to reach the self bailing hose to work on it, it's not only a nice idea, it's a safey issue. I was lucky to be able to get out of the hatch opening. That's really why I installed that deck plate.

I'm able to get to mine by sliding myself back along the port quarter berth opening. I need to remove the cushion first, but I've squeezed my 270-pound frame back there several times to inspect the cockpit drain and install a swim ladder. It's not fun but, if you're not claustrauphobic, it's not a big deal. Just be sure to push any tools you'll need in ahead of you because you're not going to want to crawl in and out any more times than necessary.

The cavity between the cockpit wall and the transom may be stuffed with styrofoam blocks that will need to be removed but, at least on my '73 model, there's a good 3- to 4-inch gap between the two.

When I crawled into that opening, I went in head first with my back against the bilge. My legs were dangling out of the hatch opening and I was stuck in there. I was lucky to be able to squirm out of there. What a scary feeling that was! Today I can laugh about it, but I'll never do that again.
My bottom paint should be coming in the mail any day now. I went out and bought a power washer, but what I've found that will take that in-bedded dirt out of the old bottom paint is a sanding block on the end of a stick with 80 grit sand paper. It's a dirty job. I should go out and buy a special suit to wear while I'm do it. I'm using the full face respirator. I'll be glad when I'm done with that.

joe, what paint are you using? I just powerwashed, then sanded with a large sponge with 120 grit, then rinsed and dried. Seemed to work pretty good. What are you going to clean your hull with? I didn't really worry too much about blisters. I didn't see any sign of them, but i didn't really want to find any! I just wanted to splash.

Ahoy there, Keith!
I'm using Super Ship Bottom ablative paint. I got two seasons out of the last bottom coat. My problem was, in-bedded dirt that I couldn't remove with the power washer. I tried scrubbing in out and that didn't work. Wayne had the same problem. We're both using the 80 grit sand paper and that's working. I should be all done with the hull prep by tomorrow. I won't be able to splash till the end of the month. My club doesn't have the docks or mooring balls in yet. They are in the process of building a new Kon-Tiki raft for setting moorings and installing the 22'X3" galvanized pipes that hold the docks. We check our mooring every year before the boats go on them. Have fun out there this year Keith. You earned it!
