Spray paint touch up

The high temperature spray paint I've used for the heat shield / water tank on my heating system doesn't appear to be available in cans. By the time I get the heavy, delicate thing into the boat under the shrink wrap and installed, it is going to need some touch up.

Has anyone had any luck with bleeding all of the pressure out of a spray can, puncturing it, and decanting it into a bottle for touching up with a small brush?

rodger in most spray cans they put drying agents in them...you can spray a little amount in a small beker or jar lid and load your brush from there .....just play with it in the shop a little and you will find its prolly ok

OK, here's why I asked. I had a small speckle where I didn't notice a bit of fluff that had fallen on the surface before I sprayed it. When I brushed it, it left a very small spot of aluminum.

I sprayed some paint into the spray can cap and picked it up with a small artists brush. As soon as I touched the bares spot, there was a quarter size bloom in the paint from the spray solvents. 3 - 4 spray over coats later and it's still visible

This is a very fast drying, high temperature paint so its behavior may not be typical.

hummmm how about one of thoses little bullet hole decals to cover it lol...was it dry a the time you brushed it on the spot

on second thought you may have to fog it with some acetone if it id laquor based paint that usually helps it lay down...but remember that is nasty stuff and ware a resparator and use a good fan to move the air..sounds almost like a fish eye ...you may be able to use a heat lamp if not acetone.....hope this helps

Very dry. The stuff dries in minutes and it had been dry for several days.

No, it's very flat paint and the coats have been sticking to each other very well. I was actually trying to get just one drop into the little ding and it was sort of like trying to put a single drop on a paper towel. I've never seen paint act quite like this. It must be the high level of solvents.

Next time I do it, I'm going to let the spray puddle dry and do the touch up after the paint thickens. The way this stuff behaves though, I'll only have about 30 seconds of the right consistency.

hummmmmm wish i had more for you to try but that is all i have learned in 63 years of goofing up i would like to know what kind of paint you are useing if thats ok.... you have got my interest up on this...

Sorry, I thought I mentioned it. It's Rustoleum high temperature paint for BBQ grills and wood stoves. The 7750 Almond was almost a perfect match for my boat's interior and it may get hot as it's serving as the backing for the new diesel cabin heater and flue.

Subsequent touch ups went fine letting the stuff evaporate for a few minutes first. I think the first stuff to come out of the can may be solvent heavy and, when you give just a quick burst to get a puddle for brushing, you get mostly solvent. The solvent also doesn't have a chance to evaporate off when you stick the nozzle right into a small container.

After a few spray coats, my little goof is almost invisible except when the light is exactly right.

thanks for shareing..... you have really intensified that heater project.... incorporating some other functions as well..... keep up the good work...it almost looks like a solar panel i had to make for a man in augusta about 35 years ago only we used copper sheets that was a real eye opener for me .......
