I know Bacon Sails out of Annapolis has a sound reputation and pretty sure they will deliver exactly what they listed. The O'Day 25 seems to have an odd sized mainsail with the foot only being 9 foot and not a lot of room on the boom for a little bit more foot. When I measure it, there does not seem like any room for over 9 foot. So when I was checking the used inventories of sail lofts I was really happy to see a mainsail with the right dimensions and a good+ rating for $245. No rips or holes. I have been looking off and on since last summer. This is the first time I have bought a sail without having it in my hand.

Does anyone know the best way to remove glued on letters from a sail? The sail has "Annapolis Hotel" on it. I thought perhaps getting it warmed up with a hair dryer to remove, any better ideas?

I am still waiting for a mainsail to come back from Sail Care. I could ask the people at Bacon Sails, will give them a call tomorrow. I did some searching and what I found was to get the letters off first and then use MEK. Is there something not quite as aggressive as MEK for removing the adhesive?

I used a hair dryer on the medium heat setting to remove the numbers on a dacron sail years ago. After the numbers were removed, there was still a slightly sticky residue left on the sail surface even after using a solvent to try to remove it. Over time, the sticky surface will attract dirt and dust. An image of the old numbers will begin to appear as more and more dirt gets stuck to the sail. To prevent this from happening, sprinkle liberal amounts of white talcum powder (baby powder) on the sticky portion of the sail. The white powder will stick to the sail instead of dirt therefore somewhat preventing the appearance of dirty numbers on your sail. Of course this will only work if you have a white sail.

Thanks Ted. I did read about another person using talcum powder. I guess if I am diligent over time I can also wear down the residue. I think I have a clearer picture of how I want to handle this without destroying a good sail in the process.

Good post Dave! I have been contemplating getting a new (used) main for my 27' - I'm pretty sure its the original and I was wondering how to get numbers/insignias off a used sail...
Please let us know how the sail looks.

I read that Bacon Sails under sells and over delivers. That was my experience. They rated this sail as Good+, if this is Good+ their excellent must be really special. Not a thread popped on the sail and no stains. My wife said she does not want me to remove the lettering. It matches the color of the boat and she says it is well done and does not want to risk degrading this sail to remove it. Nice sail bag came with it. Worth $245 to me.

Happy costumer experience for me.

It looks like one of the sails when each hotel sponsored a boat in the CRAB regatta. I'll be at Bacon's tomorrow. I'll tell them you spread the good word on their business. They open on Saturdays starting April 3rd.

CRAB for what it is worth is Chesapeake Regional Accessible Boating IIRC, and a great non-profit that helps disabled people get out sailing.

I googled CRAB sailing and went to their website last night. The program looks great and boy do they sell donated boats at a very humble price.

I was thinking the same thing. Now I just need to think of some colorful story for the huge CRAB on my sail for all the lake sailors in my area.
