Between 3 or 4 feet of snow on the ground and back surgery pending I will go nuts if I can't stay a little bit useful. I had this empty Brandy bottle and a ball of hemp and time on my hands so I did this.
My proceedure was flawed because you are supposed to start with a full bottle and empty it as you work. ;)

hummmmmmmmmm ...looks like you are all tied up in knots there Ross:D........ nice work ....keep ya chin up and maybe the back thing will not be so bad .....good luck...

If I was an old car I would need new shocks and ball joints and be good for another 50,000 miles. We,re working on it.
The hemp gives a nice non-slip grip.

Nice work Ross. But don't you have something that needs varnish? I thought that was the usual winter pastime? Especially someone involved in exotic woods. Hey, can you make your own external spine? Could use alternating woods like zebra, mahogany, and certainly oak for a strong spine. It is my opinion (15 years Rn in ICU) that you don't have back surgery until you can't stand it anymore. There is no such thing as a "simple" procedure. I have been winess to such horrid things in a surgical ICU. Not to scare you but.......Anyway, when the arthritis gets ahold of ye clubs , yur can hangs n to thy grog. Patrick

Over three days, my wife and I recovered 6 1970's looking plaid interior cushions. It wasn't as hard of a job as I thought. I do have experience from an auto trim shop but that was using pre-sewed material. I marked and cut the fabric, showed her were the folds and seams needed to be, and she sewed it. The hardest part was driving an hour one way to get the remaining cushions between snow storms.
We still have to add the buttons that pull the material into the cushion but we love them and saved a boat load of money. The outdoor fabric was 50% off and they had a coupon for another 10% off. it worked out to under $8 a yard.

Patrick, I have gotten to that point. From all reports I have been referred to one of the best in the Baltimore region. His plan is for minimally invasive decompression on L2-L4. My son is an ICU nurse at Hopkins Bayview.
edit to add: When I had colon surgery 3 years ago I asked him how this usually turns out. He said that he wasn't a good one to ask because he only sees the ones that go bad.

Sailing in the Winter

Tampa Bay weather has been unseasonably cold, but no snow... this afternoon promises to be great sailing weather, 58 degrees, wind 10-15 from the South...

There is a lot of satisfaction in a project like that. Nice looking work.

Winter is long in Wisconsin's Northwoods. One way to keep sailing our C26 is to do it online. We launched our site January. Can't wait for the real stuff though, in May.

Although Florida, north Florida that is, isn't the snowy deluge most of you are experiencing it is unseasonably cold here as well. While 40 degrees with 25 knot NE winds might thrill many of you it's a winter cleaning for me. My winter time endeavors focus on a top to bottom shakedown with an emphasis on cleaning, repacking, engine maintenance, etc. That leaves the entire spring, summer and fall (fall is through December here) for being out almost every weekend.

No snow here unfortunately. The winter olympics will be finished on grass. I just spent a week in Sydney Australia watching the Sailors avoiding ferries in the harbour. Boat traffic there is very hectic. Now I'm watching sailors in Vancouver harbour. It's easier to go sailing than fight olympic fans and traffic in the city.

While Watching the Rain and the Olympics ............

................. outside my backdoor here, I decided I would renew the lenses in my three hatches which, after ten years, were showing their age.

What got me originally started on this project was a write-up in DIY Boat Owner by a "professional" lens replacer. I certainly hope he didn't quit his day job to start replacing hatch lenses because his procedure is somewhat "wanting". Followed his procedure for the first hatch and the finished grouting was so rough I tore the one hatch apart and redid it with my own procedure.

Once you have a decent procedure (which is pure common sense and a little experimentation) it is incredibly easy to do. The finished product is identical to the original silicone grouting. It's all done in the warmth of your shop and the only thing which takes time is waiting for the Dow Corning 795 to set for three to four weeks.

Total cost for all three, $118.00 for the 3/8" acrylic and $8.00 for the DC 795.

Next time, I'll replace the lenses as soon as they start to show crazing (around eight years) and won't even give it a second thought, it's that simple.

i cannot make my hands make knots and i cannot make snowmen---lol---so i have to find ways to occupy my time online lol......so i come here and harass youz guyz lol....kat just sleeps and tries to keep warm on my lap..LOL--i have already done my brightwork--done with sea water and teak oil...LOL..is purrrfect!!!!!!

uhoh--i forgot to mention--i am in slidell, la, awaiting mardi gras tomorrow then we spozed to head out as soon as a weather window opens--

Never too late to learn a new trick, show up at my door with a nice shape rum bottle and we can figure out a good design for covering it and get it done before we finish the bottle. I will even provide a funnel for refills. lol. ;)

To cold to do anything so!

I went to the Miami Boat Show :)then to Key West for a week it's chilly here:eek:, but we did go sailing today, Saturday we'll head up the gulf coast to visit with relatives and friends, work a little on their boats. By april I should make it back on Lake Erie just in time to launch my own boat. Not a bad way to spend the winter :redface:

I've decided to wait out winter in SW Forida. The boat is on the hard up north and I am down here until the end of March. It hasn't been real warm, but far better than Olcott, NY weather - even though snow has been light up there.

My wife had back surgery in 2004, L34 to 4 and 4 to 5 were fused. Prior to that she was virutally chair ridden. She worked really hard for months on the therapy to stretch ligaments, build strength, and regain fitness and went through a lot of discomfort doing it.

The good news - since then we have driven to Alaska and back 3 times and each time canoed 2 weeks on the Yukon River, sailed an aggregate of months on our HC37, bicycled a ton, canal boated in Belgium and England and are planning a bicycle trip in Germany later this year as well as a full year of sailing.

We feel so lucky to be alive in this day and age and place where we can get this kind of help. We hope it works out for you.
