You can raise almost any mast with an A frame mounted on your boat, including a mast that steps down through the cabin. I raise my mast with a Gin Pole by myself at least three times a year. I have a CDI Roller Furler. If you have a roller furler similar to mine, it probably has it's own halyard. So what you would do is use your Jib halyard connected to the Gin Pole to raise your mast. You can use an A frame with a block and tackle if you like, but I think that the Gin Pole is faster and easier. Check out my photo album under "Trinkka" O'Day 222.

I lowered my mast today and went about it a bit different. I tied my 150% jib sheet to my jib halyard and tossed it in the back of my truck bed. My buddy stood near the cab and lowered it slowly as I stabilized the mast coming down to an extension ladder I strap extended to my back rail. It was much easier to lower it with the sheet being far away from the boat. The additional angle made the effort much less. I think I am going to mount a winch tower in the bed of my truck up near the cab. I can never see raising or lowering the mast without it being on the trailer and attached to the truck anyway.

Good luck on you design, it is amazing how differently people go about this task.

Whatever works for you Dave. As long as your boat is sitting nice and level from side to side on the trailer, you should have no problem with that arrangement. I used to attach a 60' X 3/8" line to my Jib halyard shackle up high cleated off at the bottom of the mast, with the line running through a bow sheave. I could raise/lower my mast by myself, standing on the sliding companionway hatch. The line really didn't do any good until the mast attained that certain angle. My mast is 27' long. This worked for me for many years. I wouldn't try that today with my roller furler attached to the mast though unless I had some help.

I need to figure out how to tie the ropes coming from the sidestay brackets so they slide up or down the mast to give better side to side stability. I always raise and lower the mast on level ground but if there was a sudden wind gust, I know I would have little chance to stop the mast from going over the side. I do not know for sure but it seems that the side stays would bind even with the turn buckles turned all the way out when lowering the mast to the rear of the boat.

Any thoughts if the sidestays would have enough slack to allow the mast to lower to about a 40 or 45 degree angle?

Dave,
What you probably need to do is make up two pivot bridles with snap hooks and welded rings like I did. You would also need two pad eyes for your deck and two small shackles to attach in between your stay toggle straps on each side of your boat. If you want to lower your mast aft, you should build a Gin Pole or continue doing it the way you're doing it now. When you get your pivot bridles set up, the rings should come even with the pivot point of your mast. The baby stays would connect to these rings, and also to the mast via the noose and the Rolling Hitch. Nothing has to slide on the mast. You'll have the same tension on the baby stays when the mast is up, as it was when it was down and ready to go up. This is the idea of the bridles. As far as your stays are concerned, I'm really not sure if you need to mess with them or not. My friend Jeff raises his mast on his OD 25 over the bow and I think that he does have to loosen or remove the rear side stays. I watched him last year but really wasn't paying that much attention. I don't have to touch any stays on my boat except my back stay, which needs to be loose enough for me to connect my fore stay once the mast is up. Here's some pics of the pivot bridle idea compliment of Bruce Bingham. Dave, if you want me to send you some pics and info, email me at sailtrinkka1986@verizon.net and I'll send you what I have.

Hi Keith,
Thank you for all those nice things that I asked you to say about me. :D We're getting snowed in here too in "The People's Republic of Massachusetts."

What a snow joe, we were at McGuire AFB in NJ and saw nearly three feet in about five days. Then dug out, drove home, and were greeted with another three inches when we hit Chattanooga, TN.!
Lord I feel all strung out......another son leaving for the service...my boat in dry dock I am trying to build....my house being remodeled (and a total disaster right now and inhibiting my sailing dreams), the yard is a total disaster after all this snow and rain plus the carpenters seem to want to park on the grass-mud, a new job this year, and turning 49....
will the world just stop for a moment?!?!

Hi Keith!
Back in 1963 I was stationed at Fort Dix NJ in the 3rd Training Regiment which is pretty close to McGuire AFB and I remember those snowy days back then. Our wooden barracks were so old, they had coal furnaces. I'm sure that when the carpenters get finished it's going to look good. Hey, you just do a little at a time on your boat and it all gets down after a while. I'm going to order my bottom paint next week. It takes a few weeks to get it and they ship it by snail mail. I hope that they don't throw it around. If that stuff ever leaked out of the can in the mail truck, the fumes could kill the guy. Good luck with the remodeling.

thanks joe,
this year i think i am going to forego the ablative paint and use some sort of "smooth" paint. But first i have to finish running the wire through the deck and into my mast.
We had a great time in the "great white North". We went to phili, and there to the franklin institute to view the bodies exhibit. then to some fancy steak house(?brazialin?) in Phili for my oldest son's(the one who is crew chief on the C-17) 21st birhtday. that set me back a penny or two I can tell you!!!...but worth it.
.......Kuntry come to town...

P.s sorry pix are deranged, it does that when i load them from my Iphone...thanks for looking

Hi keith,
All I did was save your pictures to "My Pictures" on my PC then I selected each picture and right clicked on it and chose "Rotate Clockwise" in the window. I have a Dell with Windows XP. Hey you folks had a good time and that's what counts. Good luck to the boys and many thanks to them for protecting our country.
