Hello, I just bought a 1976 Hunter 30. It's my second Hunter (after a 25) and the largest boat I've owned. I'm real excited about her and want to know everything I can about this fine boat. In some material I found mentioned of a "gusher" pump. Is this boat equipted with a manual gusher pump and I just can't find it? Also, I've sailed on other boats that if there is a problem with the pedistal steering one can attach a tiller for emergency steering. Does anyone know if a '76 H-30 has an emergency tiller option? One more think. The is a small oval insert on the front of the seat right behind the steering wheel. It looks like this could be removed to reveal something, but I haven't tried very hard, for fear of breaking something. Does anyone know what this could be?
Thanks, Bob

Congrats on your new H30 Bob. There is some help under the "Boat Info" tab, then Hunter Owner Modifications, then H30: http://hunter.sailboatowners.com/in...7&cat_id=23&aid=7765&page=article&mn=30_74-83. It is a not very good PDF of the H30 manual. It does illustrate the emergency tiller quite well. But the plumbing page is not legible.

If you have a manual bilge pump you should find the pickup near the aft end of the bilge. If there then follow the hose to the gusher pump. On my H37C there is a small metal door on the port cockpit coaming with a hole for a handle that works the pump. But lots of H30 owners will weigh in with the straight skinny.

On my 78 H30 the gusher pump is just behind the pedestal,in the cockpit sole, there is a plastic piece you have to pull up to insert the handle. I had to buy a rebuild kit and replace some of the screws that had vibrated out of the pump housing. You will have to remove the rear quarter berth bulkhead/ wall to access the area where the pump is. My emergency tiller access is through an inspection cover on the seat behind the pedestal, there is a metal pipe and a handle that fits in there.

Mine is factory Steve. Even shows on the plumbing diagram. Are there any govt requirements for bilge pumps? I could not find any.

On the subject of emergency steering, have seen the manual, but my cockpit does not having the opening the drawings indicate. Anyone else have a H30 from 77. Would love to see its manual. The 79 that is posted is great for some stuff, but the interior on mine is a little different and then there is the issue of emergency steering.

77 should have the U shaped cockpit. While 79 was the change over year to the T shape.
There should be an access port foe the tiller in the center seat at the rear of the U. On the T shape cockpit you lift the aft lazarette to access the rudder head.

interior wise they are extremely close.

I am the orig. owner of my h30. It came without a manual bilge pump and there is no emergency steering provisions either. If it has the emergency tiller hole I think it's newer. The '76 30 had a custom trapezoidal forward hatch that fit right over the deck mold combing (totally sucked IMHO, sorry JC). If yours has this or looks like the hatch opening was modified, it's a '76. If it has a flush deck opening and a rectangular forward hatch, it's a 77 or newer

Cherubini Hunter 30 manual bilge pump and emergency steering

Bob,

I have a 1979 Hunter 30 and it has a manual pump on the starboard side about a foot or so aft of the bridge deck. It looks stock. Also the plate you mentioned aft of the wheel on my boat allows access for emergency steering. A section of pipe about a foot long slides in on top of the rudder and the steering wheel slides over the top end of the pipe. An interesting solution, but one that should work....

Laters,
Bob Alden

Emergency Tiller (Or Lack Of): Further Info

Hi:

Seems that the lack of emergency tiller fitting has come up several times since I started following this forum a few years ago. The below link refers to a thread in 1998. Might (or might not) have something of use for your situation.
