Another carpet removal question -old glue

For anyone that removed interior carpet/cloth and painted: How did you remove the glue? :confused: This past weekend I removed the old material from my quarterberth with the intention of painting (once the weather warms up) and found that the glue in large areas would not come off. I scraped with putty knives, razor scrapers, and used a paint stripper wheel on a drill. I knew that the roving would add texture to the painted surface but the glue spots are going to be really noticeable through the paint. Is there a chemical that isn't to noxious or damaging to fiberglass that can be used?
By the way, I figured that the foam backing on the material would be a little funky but I was seriously alarmed at the amount of mildew present. After seeing that I wish I had tackled this a long time ago.

I wouldn't worry about smoothing out what you have by sanding. I would get it reasonably smooth but removing any high spots, which it looks like you've done and the use Bondo to smooth out rough areas and sand smooth. Then paint.
Some on the other thread have suggested relining with vinyl. I like the idea of wooden slats on firing with insulation between the fiberglass and the slats. I think it will add value with less work. It may also prevent condensation.

Try a heat gun ( not a hair dryer) if you haven't already. Works pretty well on a lot of glues- may soften it so you can easily scrape it off.

Having been a carpet guy for a good portion of my life...solvent (usually mineral spirits) a good wire brush and lots of elbow grease. Slow, tiring but if I'm clear on what you are doing about the only way to get it ALL.

Just bite the bullet. Paint remover softens it right up, allowing you to scrape it off easily. Use it sparingly and run a box fan drawing out of the forward hatch. I removed all of the lovely brown shag carpet from the 1976 Lancer 28 I had. Removal of the adhesive appeared daunting till I attacked it with remover. Not all that bad and it came out well.

I want to see pictures of the interior with just the paint. Can I assume you'lll post them tomorrow?

My carpet removal was on the floor and footwell. The Lancer 28 had an odd arrangement where there is a deep almost oval shaped footwell surrounded by a wee bit of floor. The footwell sides were gelcoat, which came out like new, and the floor was actualy the plywood top of the 15 gallon integral drinking water tank. I can't remember whether I painted white or polyurethaned, but I probably sprinkled on a little non-skid powder. You can rest assured I did not install more brown/gold shag carpet!

Heat gun, hmmm... Didn't even occur to me. I'll have to try that. I think I have a can of mineral spirits around, I'll also bring that with me. I'm planning on going this weekend and ripping out the material in the v-berth also. If I can't get a lot of the glue off I'm going to buy wood grained vinyl flooring and glue that in. I think this project is going to really improve the interior.

Mixing mineral spirits and an industrial heat gun is a bad idea... :) Use one or the other...

Removing carpeting in cabin

I did this job on my Pearson 26W about 8 years ago. After removing the carpeting from the
cabin walls I used a scraper to get a lot of the glue off. What didnt come off I sanded flat with an elloptical sander and painted with one coat of pettit undercoat and two coats of pettit
topside paint. I used no solvents. doing the job wasnt too bad It came out pretty good. If youre going to use solvents keep the area well vented and use agood quality mask

Try a mixture of warm water and vinegar, a small paint roller,for wallpaper we scratch the paper then soak it with the roller, let it sit a few minutes, the vinegar eats the glue, then scrap it off. Give it a try its a little more friendly smell before you try the turpintine. Red

That may work on wall paste but I doubt that it will touch the adhesives used on boats and cars.

Actually Red I think the harder and more brittle they are the better. It won't load up the sander. I was looking at mine and you're right its rock hard, should sand well. I will likely use a belt sander. Patience is not one of my virtues.

im having to do the same project very soon and was wondering has anyone out there used either rock guard or that textures automotive trunk paint on their hulls inside?It seems it might hide roving and imperfections and give it a more uniform look.im thinking thats what i may try....just a thought.

How about a wire wheel in a drill or grinder to take off the glue- particularly if brittle glue?
