Has anyone ever rented a life raft? I'm located near Annapolis/Baltimore and was curious about it for a possible coastal trip next summer over a 2-3 week period.

Thanks.

We rented one back in '89 when we did our first Gulf of Mexico crossing. Rented it from an aircraft place here in Baton Rouge. It was a 6 man satchel unit that they rent to folks crossing by aircraft. Luckily, we didn't have to see what it looked like outside the bag!. I recall it being expensive to rent and there was a significant "deposit", kind of like they do when ya rent a car.. reserve a space on your credit card.. My buddy has since bought a cannister one that stays on deck.

We rented a 4-man raft some years ago from USA Services in Annapolis. Don't remember the cost, but think it was reasonable. They are located a 1818 Margaret Ave, Annapolis, which is quite near Bacons.

We also rented an EPIRB from BoatUS.

It is the way to go unless you are a full time cruiser. The cost of purchasing and maintaining a life raft is not justified unless you anticipate frequent trips offshore. For a 2-3 week coastal trip you may consider the purchase of an inflatable dingui which you may also use for other purposes. Good life jackets and an EPIRB transmitter may round up your safety requirements. Keep a ditch bag with a handheld GPS and VHF, some flares and drinking water and you will be better prepared than most.

you plannin' to do the DelMarVa circumnavigation? A group from my club did a few years ago. I will try to find out from where they rented their liferafts as it was a requirement for the participants to have one.

Something Like That

Dan, For the past three seasons I've planned either a DELMARVA or a Block Island/Long Island/NYC trip only to have something hold me up, sometimes at the last minute. Three years ago Warren Millberg and I were slipping the lines for a DELMARVA when my engine conked out for the first time ever. It took me a year to diagnose that problem and it was a simple issue with a brand new racor. The last two years it was familiy issues. With five kids something is always going on. But I'm going to plan again and maybe in 2010 I'll get the chance. Joe

A previuosly organzed DelMarVa 400 circle had Viking Life Saving Equipment, Inc, USA as $250 for a 4-person, 350 for a 6. It's been a few years, and that may have been a group rate. FAX 305-374-1535, or maybe goodle them.

You can rent an EPIRB thru BoatUS. 888-663-7472. It looks like they are bases out of 147 Old Solomond Island Rd in ANnapolis. It looks like 90$ for two weeks, but this was a few years ago.
