does anyone know how close i can get my boat to Kinston, NC?

im thinking about taking a temp contract job building airplanes in Kinston, NC. it will quadruple my salary and only taxes on min wage! howevere, I would want to live on my boat for a year or so and save on rent. does anyone know what the closest marina to Kinston would be? I can't seem to google anything. I know the Neuse river goes through/near Kinston, but don't know if there is a marina. it is near new bern, greenville, washington (lived there briefly), but all those places look too far for a daily drive. its really bfe. I won't take the job if I can't live on the boat. I would be willing to drive about 30 mins a day.

New Burn, about 35 mi from Kinston, is probably as close as you're gonna get ... unless you want to truck it to Kinston and park it on the hard in your employer's parkling lot. :)

Nice little town, Kinston. And an easy drive to New Bern, a nicer town. Route 70 is four lane and most of that 35 miles is 70mph. There are some nice marinas there on the Neuse. You can sail there, it is that large. My boat was farther down by Cherry Point and across from Oriental. Probably too far. Thirty-five miles might be too far. Would not be for me if I had the opportunity.

thanks guys. i guess 35mi would be ok. thats 70 miles a day though.

I love oriental. thats where i bought my boat. wish it was a little closer.

Me too, spent a month at Sailcraft on the hard in Oriental. If you Google "new bern marinas" you will see a bunch. Unfortunately the ones that I like would add too much to your commute. Fairfield Harbour is on the other side of the Neuse for example. The one right behind the hotel would be fun, right in town. My daughter used to stay there when she worked for Seimens-Bosch.

30 minutes that's all for a great salary and be able to live on your boat. I did 60 minutes each way every day when I lived in NY to get my pension and drove heavy trucks all day 10 to 12 hours around heavy traffic on Long Island and Queens and on the way home could be more rush hour trying to keep my eyes open,but that was for NY union pay and now retired collecting a pension no pain no gain I guess as they say. I did look to to buy a house in Fairfield Harbor on a canal but we changed our minds and retired in Florida and just love it. Hi ED I am up in NY for Thanks Giving Nick

Brobins, take a look at Bridge Pointe Marina, New Bern. Access is just off US 70, Exit 417A, just over the bridge over the Trent River eastbound. Dockmaster Kim can be accomodating for live aboards on a 6 month contracted slip. I'm in one myself, a 40 ft slip on "B" dock. As noted in the other posts, Kinston is only 35 miles away and anything you would possibly need while living at the marina is available within 5 miles on MLK Boulevard/US 17 south. The drawbridge on the mouth of the Trent is currently under construction and closed to vehicle traffic, open to boats. This requires a detour to go from Bridge Pointe to the Downtown historic district, but unless you are doing the tourist thing it won't matter much.

"it will quadruple my salary"............If the opportunity to increase your wages that dramatic is only going to involve another 60 minutes round trip ( for that kiind of pay increase I would not care if it was 60 minutes one way )even if you pay yourself to commute you still will have a positive wage increase of THREE times ! ! No brainier here.......... man it up and do the commute !

I used to commute...

over 50 miles one way, with times stretching out to two hours or more some days. My boat's over 50 miles in another direction with almost an hour and a half commute.

I'd leap at the chance to quad my salary and live aboard my boat with an interstate commute of only a half hour! Are we missing something here?
