First off - "wire rope" is used for standing rigging and some halyards. Also, Steve mentioned that once you put rope on a boat, it becomes "line."

Actually, a piece of rope attached only at the top with the bitter end hanging down freely and not touching the deck (as in the lanyard of a ship's bell, a cat o' nine tails or a hanging noose) is known as a rope, even aboard a ship.
Moreover, the material a line is made off always remains known as "rope", as opposed to "chain", "cable" or "webbing".

Traditionally the entire combination of chain and rope is referred to as the rode. Chuck

AFAIK all types of anchor lines are referred to as "rodes", whether consisting of rope, chain, wire, webbing or any combination thereof.

An interesting question may be whether an anchor line that is still in the locker or on deck can correctly be referred to as a "rode" or only when it is deployed; i.e. when the vessel is actually riding to it......

Thanks for asking!
This year we had to skip Vanuatu and concentrate on getting Nelleke a new hip and on building a loghome in Idaho (Palisades reservoir). Fortunately, a new generation of volunteers is continuing the work of Project MARC and we intend to join them again for a few months each year.

Instead of living on Rivendel we plan to operate from a small cabin (see image) in the Maskelyne island group that we specially designed and built for that purpose. A Zodiac Ribster should enable us to keep visiting the neighboring islands as well as the coastal villages on SE Malekula.
