I wouldn't remove that sheave, Keith. Just cut the old line and install the eye splice in the new line right around it yourself, or take it to "Worst Marine" and have someone there splice it for you. By the way,---that cam cleat can be unbolted and flipped over so that you can snub the line off and release it in the opposite direction. I didn't know if you knew that. In other words, you can set it up so that you can let the blocks off by pulling up on the line instead of pulling down on it.

I agree with Joe, take it to somebody who knows how to splice. A good splicer sailor can be found and it will look and work good. West marine usually has such individual or knows of one. Most marinas also know who can splice.
As to the rivit, if you must,an electric drill will drill it out. An axle bolt would be the bolt to use, or maybe even a small clevis pin.
My main sheet does not have your splice, merely a bowline knot. So, I would not be affraid to just cut the line off and tie a knot.
As to your new found alternative to conservatism, I suggest you never understood the true meaning of conservative. Consider this, "VII. Thou shalt not steal.
Consider that taxes collected still belong to the taxpayers and not the government. When you take tax money taken from one and give it to someone else, no matter how noble the intent, it is still stealing.

I thought about splicing it myself, but i ordered the line with an eye spliced into it and hated to cut it, it looks so nice! I could splice a three strand, but i am not sure about this chord. I have a machin shop just down the street. I may take it to him and see if he could take it off and put a small bolt in there. Reason being that he could turn the bolt and get the threads off so that the pully wheel is not spining on threads but on a smooth shaft.

You could get that pin out by grinding it with a Dremel Tool and grinding bit, or carefully use a regular electric drill with the right size bit that will cut the small flange out of it. Then use a bolt and nut with super strength Lock-Tite in the threads. I've used my electric drill many times to remove rivets. I've been doing splices for years, but I still need the directions when it comes to doing braid line. In Hervey Garrett Smith's book called "The Marlinspike Sailor," There's a good set of directions with good illustrations for doing braid. I made a copy of it for myself and this is what I use. Check your local Library for this book. It's also a great book to own. Good Luck!

Consider that for this function a spliced on line to a fixed pivot is not really necessary nor may not be the best method.
If a good knot is used the line can be routinely taken off block to be washed and cleaned during a time when boat is not being used. So, you could take the line home for cleaning when you put boat under wrap for winter.
Why? Do you sail anywhere near salt water? Washing salt residue out of line might extend it useful life? If line get damp, does it ever get mildew?
Maybe it is time for a bright new line?
When dealing with Keith, it is relevant to consider his leanings. Maybe he even ties a left handed bowline? See this:

It may not be rocket science but it can still be a little confusing. This PDF is well diagrammed and has all of the tools, tips and techniques you'll need. Tried youtube vids but they are not detailed enough and poorly done. The one you'll need to download is the ''Class 2 double braided'' PDF. The one on fids is also useful.

I looked at samsonrope.com, the six strand eye splice. I followed the instructions without the rope, just reading. I have to say i was somewhat intimidated. I picture taking a long weekend at the club with some rope, and the instructions and some help from the clubmates, a beer or three, and figuring that out! it looks a like a physicis problems, easy once you have seen one, done one, and taught one!

A good point well taken Ed. Yes, I do sail in salt water, but I never wash my Main sheet or Vang lines. A knot on a set of blocks seems so "land lubberly" to me though. I think that it would be a good thing for Keith to learn to splice his own braid lines. If I can do it, anyone can do it. If he removes the sheave and replaces the axle with a nut and bolt, he'll still be able to remove it again if he wishes to wash the line. In place of a splice, he could also make an eye with the braid and seize it with a sailor's palm and needle seizing, and that would work just as great as an eye splice, and also look nautical. In fact, I used this technique to attach my rudder blade hold-up pendant line to the blade.

Your tax money goes to pay for the VA in atlanta to care for our wounded, to pay the salery for an airtraffic controler in miami, a new highway in montana, etc, etc. So all taxation is stealing and thus wrong and should be eliminated?Then you, Ed ,are advocating anarchy. Why not just buy a shackle for your existing loop, cut off existing line and use new shackle to attach line to block? Very easy fix.

Forcing people to go to jail or pay a fine if they do not get your health insurance is not in U. S. Constitution but is in your health bill.
