some comments on ghosts....

So tell us happy boater, what about that "which is nigh on inaccessable"?

Rich, I hand sanded using a pressure about like you would use to rub someones back. i rinsed often, and went in a circular pattern. when i tried sanding back and forth like I do with wood, i got deeper scratches that were hard to get out. I switched to a new sheet of sandpaper about every 1/4 of one side of the boat. Once I got the rythm down it went pretty fast, and the buffing goes alot faster too after sanding.

Ed, The "nigh on inaccessable" area that cause ed to invoked the ghost of vince lombardi (who i think is some northerner who used to coach an ice hocky team) is accessable by removing the white laminated plywood floorboard under the gangway steps. to remove it you have to remove the steps, and that little box under the steps. I just used a hole cutter to cut a two inch hole in the bottom of "that llittle box" and took a peek. It was dry.

Joe, I am about ready to spash, (if i put off the bottom paint till spring) I fixed a flat on the trailer today. I have dreams of hauling to the club tomorrow, but maybe not. my new halyards and sheets should be arriving any day,I was hoping the new line would come today. so the earliest i will get it would be tomorrow afternoon. I bought it while onsail from this website's store on halloween. They were real nice to work with. :)

Thanks to MaineSail for the info i found on restoring gelcoat in the threads "buff magic" and "Sailors helping sailors". Sailors helping sailors seems to lean toward not wet sanding, but not wet sanding,( and just buffing), did not work for my boat.

Thanks guys,
Keith

Chris' Ericson did not need wet sanding as the gel was oxidized but still in okay condition. The Presta Gelcoat compound was amazing. This is why I always suggest to try an area first. If you fight with it, and the shine won't come up, you'll need to wet sand first. No right or wrong just whatever works to get the desired end result..;)

Well said. The great thing about gelcoat is that it is pretty forgiving.

I spent the whole weekend tying up loose ends. Little things like figuring out how to secure the cassette toilet, fixing a loose connection. Putting up curtains, then taking them down cuz they didn't look right, compounding and polishing the cockpit, the last area to need it, putting up the oil lamp (it is really cool), and last night my wife and i just hung out in it reading and listenening to music....dreaming of days to come when we are really on the water....

One other thing i forgot to mention about polishing, when the wax says wipe it off "just before it dries" that is what it means, otherwise it is a bear to get off!
Keith

P.S. Hey ed, what about my comment about your beloved soccer coach?..you know, that vance lumbar fellow? ;)
