What size shaft? I have one not being used that looks like that. The bolt should take all of the strain. The tiller should fold over the shaft portion and the torque is applied through the cheeks. The bolt serves as a pivot and keeps the assembly together.

It would also help if you said what the tiller cap was made of...if it is bronze or stainless steel, you may be able to have it repaired... by welding a new "ear" on to it and drilling it for the bolt. IMHO, that is a bit under engineered, as there is only one bolt and all the stress is on the small area of the ears... having the bolt further back would give it a lot more support.

It is for a 3/4 inch rudder shaft.

If you have one not being used I would be interested.

A good machine shop would be able to take what you have a modify the remaining parts and make a very serviceable rudder head. A quick look from my point of view, I'd cut off the other flange, grind off the remaining flange bases, then drill a horizonal hole in the rudder head itself. The section the tiller is bolted to could be bolted to the modified rudder head! This would make a stonger connection than the original configuration. My 2 cents worth! Good luck! Have a great day!

That's a good idea. If I can't get one to replace it I may have to try that!

I think it is made of bronze.

Bronze Rudder Head for 3/4" Shaft: PP 83-975BR:
Cast Bronze Rudder Head fits 3/4" Rudder Shaft with a 3/16" wide key on the Forward side, and features 1/4" bolt for clamping it to the Shaft, as well as an adjustment screw for tightening the key into the keyway. Rudder Head is (maximum) 1 1/4" wide with 3/8" hole on aft side for Tiller Head bolt, and fits over the top 2 1/8" of Rudder Shaft. Frequently used with Bronze Tiller Head (PP-83-975BT) for 1 3/8" wide Tiller.

No price. They can do custom jobs too. I'd call them.

BTW, I have purchased items from them a few times, as have others. They are a reliable vendor and a lots of help on the phone.

BTW, IIRC, the bolt should be on the aft end of the rudder cap, so that the turning loads are taken by the sides of the cap, not by the bolt alone.
