Datamarine instruments

I have some old (mid 1980's) Datamarine instruments (SL100 and SL200 models) located next to the companionway bulkhead on my boat. A 3.5" diameter hole was drilled through the bulkhead and it appears that the instrument is held in place by the front bezel flange and a circular ring on the back side of the bulkhead. I want to remove them but can't seem to get them out. The circular ring on the cabin side is held in place with 3 set screws. I've removed the set screws but the ring still cannot be removed from the back of the meter. Before I use additional force and risk breaking something I'll regret, does anyone know how these instruments are held in place? Thanks

Slip the round ring off and the instrument slides out.

There is probably some type of sealant used and that could be holding the instrument in place. Generally it would be Life Calk or Seal, or silicone.

Higgs' comment makes sense. Take a thin putty knive or spreader and work it under the bezel to break any possible adhesive seal. P.O. might have used silicone or life caulk instead of a rubber gasket to waterproof the bulkhead.

All your comments make sense however, I haven't been able to remove the ring in the back of the instrument. I was wondering if there was something else holding it in place besides the three set screws. Maybe the previous owner applied some adhesive there too? Thanks for your replies.

can you get an oil filter wrench on the ring to turn it?

The instruments ring is held in place by the set screws. However, sealant and corrosion can make the removal of the ring difficult. Take your time - try to rotate back and forth the ring to free it. As mentioned before, a thin blade putty knife will help remove the instruments once the ring has been removed… Be careful the sealant/adhesive can make it difficult to remove the instrument housings without damaging the gel coat. Make sure you are loosening the set screws that are on the outside of the ring. Not the ones you can see on the back of the ring; those are used to tighten the instrument to the mounting surface.

There should be 3 of them and you need a very small flat screwdriver to get to them. A jeweler's size works best. 1/8" blade.
