About a month after re-glassing keel bolts in bilge after hard grounding, i notice a black fine soot or sand in the bilge. i have cleaned it out a few times, but still returns. i checked out the motor and belts but it is not coming from that area, anybody have any suggestions???

It would help if you knew whether it was soot (carbon black from exhaust) or sand. If it is soot, it is likely that you have an exhaust leak someplace. If it is sand, then the leak is likely from water getting in. Is the bilge wet??

It could also be from the hoses, as some hoses will dry up and turn into black powder before failing catastrophically, so check all the hoses too.

black stuff in bilge

Are you sure its soot. Years ago I had an oil leak in my bilge there was some black stuff that kept coming back/ I thought it was soot but It wasnt. It turned out to be a mildew that lived on oil. Heres a hint. Does it have kind of an old onion smell? In any case its easy enough
to get rid of. Clorox kills it

Re: black stuff in bilge

Smell it, taste it, rub it between your fingers, is it gritty or smooth ? does it wipe off easily? does it float? There can be many explanations for such as this but you can narrow it down by careful looking.

Did you encapsulate the keel bolts in fiberglass?

Soot from a Yanmar is often caused by the wrong belts being used' If you have recently installed a new belt, determine if it is an OEM or aftermarket belt.
