I've read the bible cover to cover but never even opened the Quran(sp) that might be cultural.

. Reading can be as big of a waste of time as watching soap operas. I'd rather sail.

Sailing can be as big a waste of time as fishing. They are wonderful ways to waste time. We are all alloted the same amount of time and how we choose to use it is our own decision. If you have a life style that pleases you and have the means to sustain it then you are successful. Some men spend their time creating fine furniture that if they ever sell it they make about a buck an hour. Some men like Charlie Cobra spend their free time rebuilding old wooden boats that some other people consider a waste of good sailing time. it isn't fair to say that the person who reads is wasting time when very few of us use our time productively.

Sorry Ross I did not mean to be judgemental. But the discussion seemed to me to be leaning towards the ideal that reading is a virtue. I was trying to make the point that what you read is important. Reading some books exposes us to great ideals and possibly makes us better people. Other books are roughly equivalent to watching soap operas. There is absolutely nothing wrong with watching the "young and the Restless" or some pulp fiction. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wasting time. I personally waste a lot of time. My preferred method of wasting time is a beam reach with 15 knots of wind and a sunny to partially cloudy day. In my dreams I am going somewhere but in my reality I am usually going in small circles (10 miles or so ) on a lake. All is good and probably nothing will matter once we are dead. But if I get to go cruising I will feel better on my deathbed. Even if the Chesapeake bay is a big polluted disappointment I will know that I piloted my own little sailboat around the bay and discovered these facts for myself. I seriously doubt that chesapeake bay oysters are as tasty as Appalachicola oysters.

Hermit, To get rich you write a book about how to get rich and get a half million people to buy it. There was a scam in the '50's that involved an advertizement saying send me 5 dollars and I will send you details on How I made 25,000 dollars last year. What you got in return was a single typewritten page that said you should place an ad in a national publication saying," send me 5 dollars and I will tell you how I made 25000 dolars last year".

I don't disparage anyone's reading taste - I fear we are the last generation of readers. I do highly recommend The Blind Horn's Hate. If you are a sailor and interested in the Age of Discovery you will not be disappointed.

My wife (the "Admiral") just read "Adrift", by Steven Callahan, and recommended it to me. I am reading "Fair Wind and Plenty of It" by Rigel Crockett, about a cruise aboard the tall ship Picton Castle. Both are non-fiction.

The more people read the better able they become as writers. If you don't recognise proper sentence structure then it isn't posible to write correctly. Misspelled words are common but we have spell checker. That doesn't help if the writer doesn't know the difference between you, yew ,and ewe. Your and you're are common as are their and there. Ware, wear and where are often misplaced. The list is endless and I fear that the problem will only get worse.

Have you ever noticed how quickly conversation fades with someone who doesn't read? I have worked in homes where I was unable to find any printed material but they had a TV in every room.

For those of you with a love for both history and the sea I recommend "Let The Sea Make a Noise" by Walter McDougall. The history of the northern Pacific from Magellan to MacArthur. It is comprehensive and explains in detail many of the things we know superficially.

The confusion with these two carries over to pronunciation also! Which reminds me of one of my favourite stories:

Back when I was single, I was in our local liquor store buying a couple of bottles of wine to repay a friend who had given me a spare cabin top winch for my SJ 24. My daughter was with me and when the attractive lady at the cash register- who up until now had been very friendly- rang up the total, my daughter observed "not bad for an old winch". You could see the icicles form in front of your very eyes!!

Ross is sailing still an option for you this year?? When do you haul out??? Last night I was reading charts of the outer banks around Alligator River. This was read with a cruising guide to North Carolina. It helps me to compare charts to text. Of course I have been looking at charts and reading a crusing guide to the Chesapeake bay. So Ross what is the best time of year to visit the Chesapeake and is it better on the lower bay or the upper bay??

I suspect most people who spend a lot of time reading get rich books, will never have enough money. I also suspect most people who are addicted to self-help books, will never be completely happy with themselves. Just like those that spend all their time as armchair sailors may never actually go cruising. Well....... it doesn't make any difference what you read....... reading is it's own reward.

The greatest gift you can give your child is to share the joy of reading with them.
