We returned last week from about 2 weeks cruising the Maine coast. The trip started Friday, Sep. 4th with an overnight race from Portland, Maine to Northeast Harbor Maine(103nm). We started off strong as the scratch boat and slowly pulled away from our competition to take the win for a second year in a row. We then spent about 2 weeks cruising the Maine coast. Tim, those are GREAT pictures! We were thinking of you on Friday when the race was taking off, wondering what kind of wind you had. I see there was a postponement!

How far east did you get? If you find the time, it would be great to have a summary of the places you visited.

How on earth do you time your shot to get the porpoise/whales as they surface? I have yet to be able to do that with my camera. Someday I'll get a digital SLR.

Great to hear from you Gail. Nice article on Sunday. We moved the start outside the Hussey for better winds. I think this will be a permanent change for next year. The wind was either really good(just on the verge of needing to tuck a reef in the main) to almost nothing. It took us about 28 hours(1 hour more than last year). We started with a SE that built to about 12 knots that eventually faded to about nil by midnight. At 1am it turned around to the North and steadily built throughout the morning until about 11am. Then it died and turned around to the south again. You know, the typical afternoon seabreeze that comes up around noon-1pm around here. You can usually set your watch by it.

We did not go any further east. We still have many places in Pen and Muscungus bays that we have yet to visit. We spent a few days in NE harbor to get in some hiking and then we hit the following spots:

Swans(anchored way up in Burn Coat H.)
Seal Bay(first time here)
Bucks Harbor(A regular stop for us)
Castine(first time here)
Holbrook I(first time)
Camden(great for laundry and restocking)
Maple Juice Cove(first time, loved the Olsen house)
Boothbay(Monday night football)
Love Cove(First time)
5 islands(another favorite)

We got back Wed. and headed to my family's camp in Belgrade Lakes to visit with family. It rained once at night and we had one day with a little fog. Otherwise the weather was perfect.

I have a digital SLR that allows me to shoot multiple shots per second. Getting the whale was not that hard as he was surfacing regularly. That photo is also cropped to enlarge it.

BTW, we had a great time hanging out with the Bakers. They loved the race(as did everyone) and are planning on it again next year. Expect them to put on the pressure for you guys to join us next year.

Incredible shots! You photog skills have improved with the "new equipment".:) I love the shot of Cordelia in Seal Bay (guessing)..

P.S. The moisture meter is ready for you to pick up any time. I left you a VM as to where it is.

Thanks dude. You racing tomorrow night? Looks like you guys did awesome last week.

And yes, that is Seal Bay. Good eye. The lighting was perfect. The sun had gone down but there was enough light reflecting off the clouds to create those conditions. I hardly touched it with Picasa. The new equipment makes a big difference in both quality and my desire to get a good shot. My old camera was pretty crappy so I just didn't try very hard.

The Bakers are awesome people; we saw them this weekend. They were taking off for a daysail; we were taking off our sails in advance of mast lowering (which went without incident Sunday) and our haulout Friday.

I've heard snippets from one of your fellow club members that there are thoughts of maybe moving it ahead a week or two on some years. If that happens, there's a real good chance we'll be joining you.

Tim shoots a Nikon D-90 with an 18-105 VR lens.. Sorry for stepping in but I helped his wife with x-mas gift choice.:)

It even takes great photos of our boat..;)

There is that possibility. We had an extra week this year with nothing scheduled because of when Labor day fell but I am not sure about next year. The other hurdle is that it is a one way race. It takes 2 days to sail up there and a really long single day to get back if you turn around immediately. So the 3 day Labor day weekend works well for this. Every boat except one continued on for at least one week of cruising. So with that in mind it would not matter what weekend we hold it.

As you know, Kathy and I usually start off our cruise Labor day weekend to get the great weather and avoid the crowds but moving up 1 or 2 weeks wouldn't be too bad.

Why do you guys haul so early? You are moored in an ideal location. The gosslings, Jewel, Chebeague, Snow I, etc. are absolutely great this time of year.

Beautiful pictures. Someday I hope to have enough time off to be able to cruise the Maine coast. I always loved hiking Precipice in Arcadia. That was when I cruised with a pop up. I like camping on the water a lot better!:dance:
Tim, not much swing on that anchor? Those rocks look awful close.

Thanks Bob. We had actually swung about 180° to the set and the photo was taken with a telephoto lens so the rocks are actually over 200ft. from the boat. I had about 120' of rode out.
