My wife and I had a shock today to remind us to sail more. She has a colonoscopy just because she is 56....no history . I have been encouraging her in the strongest terms to get check for several years. Well they found polyps some big ones. Hopefully they will be removed next week and they haven't advanced to colon cancer. Obviously it will be a tense weekend. Wish us well and if you want to do it then do it now because you never know what life has waiting for you!!!!

I feel for you but be of good cheer. Early detection means more successful trearment. At least early detection is posible now. Within our lifetimes we have gone from respond to symptoms to early detection and treatment before any symptoms show their ugly heads.

All the best and good luck

I had a "poke around" two years ago and they removed what they found while they were in there. Sorry your wife has to go through the two-step, but the procedure itself is OK with the fun mind plastics now available. Here's to benign test results and more sailing for both of you. The hardest part of my broken leg was not being able to sail. This second time around is almost tougher. Good luck to you both.

Moonsailer, you guys will be in our thoughts. How scary it must be for you both, my mother just had some things removed from her arm, turned out benign, but I sure know how worried she was and how relieved she was after the tests, I sure hope that you get to experience the relief part and it just turns out to be one of those lessons to enjoy every moment. After Iraq, I try to be more appreciative, had some close calls and most of them were just chance that it didn't happen to me. The same thing can be said about my 150 miles of daily commuting nowadays... you just don't know.

Live for the moment!

I agree with you Moon! I can also say 'don't sweat the small stuff'! I hope you are celebrating the benign results in just a short while. I've had that procedure done a few times so far. My wife has me on my toes all the time when it comes to health issues. Good health is a blessing and should never be taken for granted.

Re: good luck to you on this

Good luck to you and your wife, Moonsailer. I believe Rogersville is on Joe Wheeler, not too far down the road from my home sailing grounds. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Good luck to your wife. I have had the polyps after several exams and they have all been OK. Everyone I know that has had them detected has been just fine. The best thing about this is that after they take them out she will be examined about every 3 years. My Doctor says that if I keep to the schedule the last thing I will ever have is colon cancer.

My best wishes are with you and yours.

I've had the procedure and my wife is not far behind. Just keep a positive attitude. I think that is very important. My prayers and thought will be with you both.

Good luck to your wife. By the time you figured what's important, you're too old to enjoy it. Go for it NOW.

Sorry to hear it, but glad you are getting preventative care so it can get taken care of early. A colonoscopy is a must do for all at some point in life. My Mom felt fine, but a GI exam had found little bumps in her duodenum last fall they were concerned about. Unfortunately my Father's life came to an end at that time, so she put off seeking further treatment for nearly nine months. When she followed up, they found that she had a very aggressive, but non-cancerous growth that was going to eventually close off her duodenum. At 73 she elected to have Whipple surgery, which was in the Doctor's words..."one of the most complicated surgeries we perform." She had her duodenum removed, her gall bladder removed and half her pancreas removed, as they are all inter-related from a plumbing perspective. She had some complications, but after nearly a month either in the hospital or at a nursing home, she is home. If she had ignored it she would have died within a few years. Because it was found and because she was able to have the surgery while she was still phycially strong (she is a vigorous 73 year old) she was able to handle it. She put on 9 pounds on purpose before the surgery and ended up losing 19 lbs total.
