What is the top speed the Hunter 33 can get.

Hello ,
I got a first boat the hunter 33 1978. With jenova sail i riched 6.5 miles/hr
And got interested what is the hunter's limits. Or What top speed i can get from it.

Speed

The technical hull speed is around 7 knots. I've had mine surfing down a wave on a broad reach at around 8.2 knots.

the formula for projected maximum displacement hull boat speed on flat water is 1.34 times the square root of the water line length.

For a more reasonably obtainable speed number just use the square root of the water line length itself.

Ah speed!!

Dan is right about the 'theoretical' hull speed. I've had my boat up to 15 knots while surfing in some following seas. Holding those speeds for 30 seconds at a clip is really exhilarating. Makes the drop down to 9 knots feel down right slow while you wait for the next wave to go through and push your speed back up again! The whole crew has those $hit eatin' grins on their faces !! :D:eek:

The 1.34 factor for the theorical hull speed formula is dependant of hull shape and hull shapes have evolved quite a bit recently. I have decided that actual boat speed over land provide us with the most desirable information for our type of sailing. We recently reached a top speed of 10.3 knots on an h34 coming down the East River in NYC through Hells Gate. The theorical hull speed of the boat is about 7 knots so given wind and current speed is relative.

H33 2004 fin keel, fully battened main
Broad Reach 25 knots AW everything up, not surfing - 8.5 knots on the log
Rear quarter 20 knots AW surfing down 2m swell 10.5 knots on the log and 11.0 knots on the GPs

Sorry, I didn't notice the date!
Anyway Mike knows what boat to buy next time:)
I have noticed on this site that it is a common fault to get the 33' Hunters mixed up.
The only true H33 is the current model, all the others are variously listed as H333, H33.5, H336 and H33_77-83.
Am I being too pedantic:snooty:

No, you're not! Hunter's made so many almost the same sounding models that we all need to be careful! We have several H33's here in Maine and they seem to be really fast, often overtaking larger boats that "should" be faster
