Whale Gusher Galley pump... broken?

I recently purchased a Capri 26 with a non-working Whale Gusher Galley Pump MK3. I ordered a rebuild kit but when I disassembled the pump all the diaphragms and seals were in good shape, there is just no return spring tension. Looking at the Whale exploded diagram it appears that I'm not missing any parts but it would seem that the end pieces that hold the diaphragms to the lipped cylinder should be fastened to that cylinder in some way. Mine aren't. The one end cap has a bolt and nut going through it with a seal inside but the spring just pushes that piece against the end piece of the pump. What am I missing? Is the piece with the captive nut supposed to be part of the piece that goes through the lipped cylinder?

There are two models, are you sure you have the right one - based on year of manufacture.

If the vendor can't help you, how can we? Try him first, wait til Monday.

Gee Stu, thanks so much for the informative post. Yes, I know what model I have and yes, I have contacted the vendor via email. While I am waiting for a reply I thought I'd post the question here in the hopes that someone had actually had one apart and could quickly answer my question...

Roger, when it comes to those pumps the choice is to replace or rebuild. The new pump is $100 and the rebuild kit is $30. I tried to rebuild one years ago and found myself in exactly the same position you're in: what the heck is going on inside there??? Since then, like heads, I've simply chosen to replace, rather than to rebuild. That's why I asked the question as I did, because there are two different rebuild kits.

Ok, thanks Stu. Now I understand what you were getting at. So far I've successfully rebuilt the Groco toilet and the Whale Flipper pump (as well as half the Universal diesel) but theres just no way the Gusher will work unless the center of the diaphrams are mechanically fastened to the piston so I'm guessing I have a broken part. Hopefully I'll hear from Whale in the next couple of days. Thanks again for replying.
