If you take the mast off, you will want to cut some of the keel off also to balance it. If it's lead you can do it with a chainsaw. So I hear.

Some boats have form stability and some have dynamic stability. A flat boat has form stability a round bottom boat with a keel has dynamic stability. Remove the keel and ballast and she will happily roll over. A center board boat with a broad beam is probably what you want. There was a spot on the news the other night about two guys that have removed the mast from a boat and are rowing it I think down the Hudson River.

I think it would be very DOUMB and very STUPID. Why not just get a power boat and be done with it?

My sailboat spent more time as a power boat on our last trip than as a sailboat. Works pretty good that way. Displacement hull excellent fuel consumption numbers. Rather slow.

I can stand slow but when it is 94 F degrees out with no wind and close to 100% humidity it gets rather miserable out there. This time of the year unless we have some storms the wind dies in Tampa Bay and is hard to find in the Gulf. I understand the same happens in the Chesapeake. July, August and Septembers are our off season. When we find ourselves looking for storms for wind and cooling off we think we are nuts.

When the temps are in the 90's and the Dew point is above 60 degrees f. I stay away from the boat. I would just as soon sit in a car in a shopping center parking lot in those conditions.

You will want to leave some of the keel for stability. Also you really want to leave some of the mast so you can fly a small sail. This will give you stability. Look at motorsailors for an example. I would be completely happy with my C30 if it had a big diesel, half the keel and a small sail. I would motor it everywhere. The biggest drawback of my boat is the draft.
If you do this to a sailboat, you will end up with a trawler basically. As long as you can achive hull speed, that is all you were going to get anyway with sails.

I have been praying for 90's down here in south Texas. It's the 100's where we are miserable. The thermostat in hy house is at 79. I don't even pay for electricity, it's just where we think it's comfortable. I remember my parents house in Ohio, they would have the thermo set at 68. 68 to me feels like there should be big slabs of meat hanging from the ceiling.

It's all relative. Here in Syracuse, I keep the thermostat at 55 during the winter. Of course, I also will sail until the ice takes over the lake...and then it's time for an ice boat ;-)

I think it would be much easier to find a power boat.
We are haveing great sailing weather here in the south east , the ice is why I left the Binighamton area Brian.

I'm told the sailing season is about to start here :D its been great so far.

For real?

Is this message for real? I think he's yanking somebody's chain. If, as this person says in a later message, they don't even have a boat yet, then why on earth not buy a motor boat?

I can understand the question as there are a LOT of low cost sailboats around with samll diesel motors that can take you a LONG way on small money as are two cylinder motor gets 14 MPG

You really cant say the same thing about powerboats as most of the trawlers that get good MPG are in the big buck range

BUT i would just buy a shoal draft boat and leave it alone if i want to motor about

I completely undestand the question. tommays hits it on the head. You can cruise along at 7 knots in a boat big enough to live on for a fraction of the cost of a trawler.

At four knots I get close to 25 MPG with my 30 ft Islander. The faster you go the more it costs per mile.
