Music while surfing..?

Hi All,

I nearly always have music playing, usually iTunes, in my office when working and when surfing sailing porn sites like SBO but just discovered a new way to listen.

I just started using Pandora (LINK) which is internet radio where you type in an artist you like and it begins playing similar sounding artists to what you chose.

Perhaps you guys have been using this for years, wouldn't surprise me as I'm slow on tech stuff, but I have to give Pandora two thumbs up!!

It's way cool and the audio quality for streaming music is some of the best I've heard. While I do have 32 gigs of music in iTunes I've heard it all many times and Pandora is letting me find lots of new tunes.

It's free and you can FF or RW songs you don't like and even give it a thumbs down rating if you don't like it so it never plays again. Giving a song a thumbs up finds more artists that sound like the ones you like.

Pandora = totally cool..

P.S. I know this is not directly sailing related but when surfing SBO it can become sailing related...

My wife said you get 40 hours free then you are supposed to pay a small amount to keep the service. Or switch user names. She has been listening to it for some time now. I will have her give me the skinny and report back.

Unfortunatly Pandora does not work in Canada, probably due to CRTC regulations.

Jon, The Jack Johnson station is smooth too!!
I carry the 120 gig Ipod and all the music I have in it.. The Genius function of ITunes collects stuff into playlists that do well!.. The I Pod plugs into stereo on boat..
I like everything from Tejano to pop to Cuban to Flaminco to New Age..etc.. .. so I-Podding is quite useful!

Pandora is just one more reason I think that the iPhone is about the greatest gadget for a sailor. The pandora app works great on the iphone (even my first generation model with the edge network). My wife loves it and likes to create new stations. Being able to rate and skip songs is brilliant. Plug into the boat stereo and go sailing. Add to that the Navionics charts, weather radar on Wunderground's mobile site, a tide app, and a clinometer. Plus I can get emails and I can stay updated on this site!!! Oh yeah - it's also a phone!

Sam,

Chill out! We're talking about music playing while your surfing the net AT HOME. Besides some of us do enjoy music on the boat and some don't. Just like some enjoy power boating and some don't, or some run generators and some don't, some use ice and some refrigeration..

call me wierd but I really love listening to baseball when I'm out singlehanding.... especially my Angels... but the Pads or the Dodgers are cool to... I've enjoyed Pandora on my lap top at work... so in the off season I'll have to figure out how I can integrate it into my boat's system.

Safety at Sea

I think listening to music while under sail might be a safety hazard. If a Baja powerboat was screaming around at night and threatening to slam into my stern I'd want to be able to hear it. But it can also be very annoying at an anchorage if someone else believes they are a music genius and everyone should have to listen to their music selections at high volume.
It woulld be far better if main sale and all other sailors started taking banjo, mandolin, fiddle and guitar lessons so we could have an official sailboat owners dot com east coast bluegrass festival somewhere in the middle east coast like Ocracoke.

Playing music so others can hear it is rude. I always try to keep it low and will occasionally do the 20 foot dinghy check if it's real calm.

I do play guitar and LOVE bluegrass! Only problem is I can't train my right hand to strum as fast as is needed for bluegrass. Tony Rice and I are polar opposites..
