If I am on the boat

In seas 8 to 10 feet, I certainly don't want to be anchored up on the boat. Give me some running room. Hopefully this one will take a hard right turn, and end up mid Atlantic, and leave everyone alone. I can certainly relate to your anxiety. Been there, done that.

Storm Pulse

Look, if we just had pouring rain all weekend people would just get bored, so unlike June & July, we now have high winds to go along with the rain. A little variety never hurt anyone, or so they say.

I feel like Bill Murray in groundhog day.

This time last week my Mom was in the hospital and I was glued to the computer tracking Bill wondering how the hell I was going to take care of my boat when I needed to get on a plane to FL to take care of my mother immediately. Luckily my Wife flew down to bridge the gap allowing me to fly down Sat.

My Mother was transferred to a nursing home Sat. Got her settled in and flew home last night. Been watching the storm of course, which seems likely to send at least 50 mph winds to Boston. Phone rang this morning at 5am. Mom was running a fever so they sent her to the hospital.... :bang:

Wind forecasts for near coastal areas of the NE are strongly driven by the predicted path of Danny. Danny is not a very classic tropical system. NWS/NHC has a mixed message in its guidance on Danny (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT5+shtml/270841.shtml?) so stay tuned.

We're not cancelling our plans for a weekend on the Chesapeake yet.

Danny looks like crap still (which is good), but the models do show prediction of regathering and strengthening unfortunately. Glad to see so many keeping a close eye and making preparations. Hopefully he flies past us here on the Chesapeake and sat/sun might not be too bad. Hopefully he just heads out to sea.

Roger, you should consider joining CYC. It is much better protected and I hear that the harbor master over where you are is a real nut

I just checked up on Danny and it looks like I'll be doubling lines on the boats tonight just in case. Looks like it's might be a little closer in that I previously expected

Last Minute Prep

From someone who has been there and done that, more than one time, let me wish you guys the best, and give you some experienced advice. Take care of your boat and plan like the worst case scenario is gonna happen. Hopefully this thing will head to mid atlantic, and leave you alone, but storms have a mind of their own. Last minute turns are very possible. Prepare for the very worst, then if it don't happen, you can bitch about all the uneeded work you did. Hope everyone fairs well.

I inquired about it when we first got the boat but we didn't know enough people in recreational boating to find the required two nominators since I was moving mostly in aviation circles at the time. The person I spoke to also implied some reservations about whether I was "salty" enough for a yacht club, probably because she focused on the part about having just bought our first boat. I didn't get much encouragement but did get the message

With two roundings of West Quoddy Head this summer and a third coming up, I've probably got the "salty enough" part covered. However, I hope to cast off early next spring and not return until it's time to take the boat out of the water so the cost of membership might not make sense.

BTW I'm not harbormaster of the part of the harbor where I have my mooring. My bailiwick starts down at the next small collection of moorings.

Roger, as a trustee of CYC, I apologize for that individual. She was also the person I dealt with when joining and has since left that position. We in no way require any level of saltiness or boating experience to join. We are a bunch of very down to earth DIY boat owners. I would be glad to sponsor you for membership. You really do not need 2. The current membership committee person would meet you and be your other sponsor.

Our only catch is that there is a waiting list. The good news is that we fill the spots in the mooring field based on your boat so you could be last on the list and get in next year if a spot opened up that suited your boat.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'm sure these are difficult time foryou and your family. Then have to deal with this weather! My prayers go out to you.

Last weekend I wrapped my boom with additional line and also tied a few small lines around my head sail. I removed my dinghy and dodger. I'd like to make it to the boat to remove my sails but my daughter is getting married Saturday @ 3:00. Danny is do here @ 2:00 along with a cold front moving in from the west. What happens when tropical air hits a large cold front?

We are going crazy. The wedding was scheduled to be outside on a beach in Duxbury. Now where running around trying to make last minute arrangement. If I can't make it to the boat I hope what I did for Bill stands up to what Danny is bringing.
