I just read an article in "Sailing" in which an owner of a Yanmar inboard said his 3GM30f starter hesitated when first attempting to start, but did eventually start the engine. He learned that the ground strap was not properly connected and by correcting that, corrected the problem. I'm not at my boat, but I have the same problem. So, I thought I'd find out where the ground strap connects to the engine before I go to the boat. this is probably simple, but I thought I'd ask before I get to the boat. Thanks, Bill

Common Problem

Bill,
This is a fairly common problem, not just on Yanmars. I would strongly recommend that you remove, inspect, clean and tighten every battery connection on the boat. The ground cable attaches on many if not most to one of the bell housing bolts. I recently did all the cables on mine, and made a world of difference. Bad, corroded or loose connections can bring on all types of problems, not just the starter being slow.

Thanks, Unless huricane Bill blows too hard, I'll work on this today.

The yanmar manual I have indicates the harness & starter battery ground being connected to the lower starter bolt. My boat as built had both of these connected to the bell housing bolt - not really much of a difference unless you are redoing some cables and the starter allows you to shorten the ground some.

The house ground for my boat was originally attached to a bolt on the front of the engine just to the upper right of the main pulley.

Check the archives on this site for Yanmar starter button problems. There was a thread in, I think, 2007 about this problem. I have the problem but haven't done anything; but trouble starting the engine in Plum Gut has activated me on this.

Certainly not a place to have engine starting problems
