We have an extended warranty for our Hunter 36 which is suppose to be valid until January of 2011. We have used it on several occasions and have had no problems. We would just call the toll free number on the contract and make the arrangements for the covered repair. This week when I called the number, no one answered the phone and there was no voice mail etc. I have been told that the company has been merged/sold or some sort of change so that there is a new telephone number but this number does not work either. I have been told that the problem should be fixed next week. Has anyone had any experiences with this warranty company lately since this change that I understand has taken place? I am hopeful that there is no problem, however I do want to get my latest problem fixed one way or the other.

Receivership in Florida

I have now leaned, after speaking with the Florida Insurance Commission, that First Warranty Group - The Hunter Extended Warranty - has been put into receivership by the Florida department of Insurance. The representative of the Florida insurance commissioner said that the claims should continue to get paid, however they may take longer to get paid. I now understand that the boat owner will have to pay and then wait to get reimbursed for anything covered by the warranty.

I just spoke with the Florida Ins Dept. The representative explained to me that the company,(First Warranty Group of Florida) has been shut down by the state of Florida due to numerous complaints. The representative explained that it is now useless to call any number except the Florida Dept of INS # 850-413-3081. It was explained to me that boatowners with valid contracts who have a covered loss are allowed to have the repair done with no prior approval and then pay for the repair themselves and then keep the receipt and file a claim with the Florida Department of Insurance to be reimbursed. The representative said that this may take up to 90 days. The representative said that official notification of these actions should be going out to the contract holders in the next couple of weeks, but that a boat owner can call the department to check on the status of the proceedings. The representative also said that a contract holder could elect to cancel their contract and receive a pro-rata return premium.

Holding Tank - Warranty

Has anyone had any experience with any plumbing claims on the extended warranty. I have a cross threaded pipe into my holding tank that is obviously a factory problem but didn't start leaking until 3 years after purchasing the boat. I just now found the source of the problem.

You can't do something as simple as replace a threaded tank fitting yourself???

Bad News

I have now heard from two people at the Florida Department of Insurance that First Warranty Group has been shut down and that it will take uo to 90 days for the Insurance Department to contact all of the contract holders. Both people said that there is no guaranty fund and so if no assets can be recovered then everybody will just be left with nothing. It was further explained to me that it will be a big court proceeding with lawyers who will expect to get paid and it will take years before anything will be resolved. In the event any assets are found, then they will be refunded so that a contract holder or claimant may receive 10 cents on a dollar of whatever he maight other wise be owed. If anyone else has any more info, please let me know.

Peggy, yes Mike could redo the cross-threaded holding tank fitting himself. But I have sympathy for Mike as Hunter (and probably other production boats) have too many "poor workmanship" issues on their boats. Not until they start doing better QC on their manufacturering processes will warranty issues go down. It's a tough issue for consumers who think they're buying quality, only to discover stuff that should have been fixed at the factory become too numerous. Where do you stop? On my H386 (out of warranty), I've had to fix so many cross-threaded items, incomplete work, poor and hidden defective workmanship I could bore you all day. Mike and those with boat defects should call Hunter on their lack of QC whenever they can. Quality workmanship won't improve until Hunter gets the "message".

I agree. Having taken my 2008 Hunter 41 apart in order to do many projects I have discovered many areas that could have been much improved with a little thought and planning. Unfortunately it is all about doing it for the least amount of money.

I have complained to Hunter but they aren't "listening." In fact, getting someone to answer the phone and/or return a call is like pulling teeth. I have found the only way to get in touch with them is to call and ask for sales. I tell them I might upgrade to a bigger Hunter if I could only get my Hunter 36 fixed.

Additionally, I ordered two parts (swim ladder plastic thingy and a lazerette bullet latch) over a month ago and they still don't have them in stock and they don't seem in a hurry to get them to me.

I am very disappointed in Hunter service. I will take this into account when selecting my next boat.
