I've bought a used boat and am changing the name. Any advice on how to remove the current name that is painted directly on the gelcoat? Also, I'm thinking of using a decal for the new name. Any pros/cons of decal vs. paint?

We removed the painted name from a boat new to us. We found the painted name when we removed the opaque decal with a heat gun. Paint stripper, acetone, and rubbing compound all failed miserably. On a tip from another sailing site we sceptically tried Easy-Off oven cleaner. It worked great, just don't leave it on too long and do a small section at a time. Use gloves and 3M green scrubby. Wash with soap and water.
I had good luck with the Easy Off and Plastic razor blades (thats right plastic razor blades) they work great without digging into the gelcoat and I believe West Marine carrys them now

Beware the dangers of changing the name! The gods take offense if they aren't properly regarded with a special ceremony. There have been many tales told late at night of men who changed the name of their boat, went down to the sea, and were never again seen.

A friend just bought a 55 MY and changed the name while it was in Florida then had a captain bring the boat up north and had nothing but trouble from engines to 12 ft seas and losing a 14 ft launch and large outboard off the boat in the Atlantic causing damage to the crane and the boats
I asked him if he had a ceremony and he said no and I said you'll continue to have shit happen till you do it
I'll let you know if any thing else has happened when he returns from vacation soon

We removed the vinyl letters from our boat, not painted, and repainted the stern. But we used vinyl letters for the new named and were very successful. We have used both vinyl and painted over the years and find the vinyl to be more durable and last longer. You can read our post on what we did here http://tinyurl.com/nbx74g

Easy Off oven cleaner. The warmer it is out, the better it works. Spray it on and let it sit for 5-10 min. User a deck brush to scrub it. You may need a second application depending on how thick it is in certain areas.
Vinyl is find. It is relativity inexpensive and will last for many years if applied properly.

was the name of my ericson when she was a racer in san diego many yrs ago--i thought was a goood one--someone had changed the name before i bought her--but i love the name....LOL is perfect !!!!

Sounds like Easy Off is the ticket. I now have a weekend project. Regarding the vinyl letters, can you get them with specific fonts/design? I'd like something simple, navy blue.
Also, re: the Sea God ceremony, I'm not a superstitious guy, but I like the idea of the ceremony and there's no downside to it so I'll do it if it is not to onerous.

names in fonts are inexpensive at graphics stores and are worth the money as the agggravation is waaaay high lol-------i think my 6 letter name was 130 dollars or so--i fergit----
If you go to the link to our website that I posted earlier there is a link in the post to the graphics company we used. They have a page for you to choose color and font and see a preview of what you choose. Lots of choices and very inexpensive. Chuck
