Years ago I helped a friend of mine install a swim ladder on his O'Day 192. The first thing he did though was install an 8" Beckson deck plate in the center of the transom. This gives you more access to not only the nuts and bolts to the swim ladder, but also your gudgions and the self bailing hose. I wound up installing one in my boat later on after I got stuck in the lazerett hatch opening one day trying to get at that hose to replace it. Anyway, he used a piece of 1/2" exterior plywood as a backup board for the swim ladder fasteners. He marked his holes on the transom and cut the plywood to fit the area inside. Then as I held the board for him, he drilled the holes through the fiberglass and the plywood. After he got through drilling the holes, he used a polysulfide caulking. We only got the nuts and bolts snug. It's important that you don't over tighten them, or all the caulking will get squeezed out. We came back about two days later when the caulking had a chance to set up, and tightened all the nuts down good being careful not to let the bolts turn. It's not really a hard job. If anything, it only takes a plan.

i installed a ladder from railmakers on my oday 20. due to the curve of the transom, i had to cut some spacers on an angle (by trial and error) to fit on the transom under the round mounting plates on the ladder using some oak. inside, i backed it with plywood. i originally tried one flat piece, but ended up using two smaller pieces again due to the curve of the transom. i used 3m adhesive sealant 5200. my ladder doesn't even need a tie down, except when trailering.

couple things to think about:

1. you want a ladder long enough, and positioned so that you have steps in the water when down for easier climbing. (the older you are, the more steps you want in the water : )
2. adequate backing depending on your transom.
3. if you have to tie it down, make sure it's a quick release you can undo in the water.
4. When mounting, make sure the ladder does not get in the way of the rudder when turned completely to one side.

I've got a pretty straight forward WM folding ladder. I'll take pix tomorrow night on the Wednesday night cocktail cruise.
