Running from a storm

Wahoooo.

Was out with three other boats this weekend - of course partying and drinking.

We were coming out onto the Potomac River about 2:00p and this storm blew up in about 20 minutes. Java was headed up river westbound with two other boats about 2-3 nm behind us. We were just on the edge and taking sustained winds of 25kts. The other boats behind us reported 35kts. The storm was moving from the SW to NE.

Great Ride....

This was typical of storms along the East Coast this weekend. They came up fast and left fast. Thought it was safer on Saturday when the forcast was only for a "slight chance of a thunderstorm later in the evening" - needless to say at around 3 in the afternoon we had a storm similiar to yours - heavy rain, winds of 25kts with little visability - then it was gone in 20 minutes

Crazy day Saturday on Lake Michigan

Started out with 5 to 10 Kts of wind, died down to 0 to 5 for about an hour, then all of a sudden we got some 30 kt gusts with about 20 kts sustained that lasted rest of the day:). Crazy!

Sailing ahead of a storm like this is great fun and really exhilarating! As the waves build you can surf down the face and gather some real speed. I've done it many times. If the storm is moving very fast and you need a break, just heave-to and ride it out, no worries.

I don't enjoy storms like I used to. I used to say that was really sailing, but now I know that the boat can take a lot more weather than I like to sail in.

I second that question. Bear in mind I have only 5 hours of storm experience so far. I'm thinking 2nd reef with 25% genoa showing. We were making great progress before Sunday's broke, then we were caught by the storm and our unreefed main was savaged. Our sustained winds off Cape Charles Sunday evening were in the mid 30's with gusts into the mid 40's and higher for half an hour. Breaking waves builtup quicly to 6-8ft with one bigger wave in the 10-12 ft range came through to spice things up. Then it got dark and we went through another 5 storms of dimenishing strengths. I would have deployed the genoa a bit but I could not see the storm edges and did not want to risk loosing the 2nd sail on the same day.

I talked to Finally II about the storm. They got slammed by the storm and it lasted a long time. They are in Annapolis now and they were saying that they have been hit almost every night by a storm (Finally II and I have a running tradition of having storms following us and high winds finding us). Oh yeah, Finally II did tell me that they were quite impressed by your Manson Supreme!

I saw your pics from the group link. It looks like all had a good time. I will probably be out haunting the Potomac River next weekend and also this coming Monday and Tuesday. Maybe I will see you guys out there. Don't forget about the raft up on September 19-20
