We're out and wanted to see if anyone else was..? We have no plans other than where the wind and our moods take us. We do, surprisingly, have internet in many places and I'll probably check SBO from time to time.

We are heading to the camp this weekend Maine but plan to be out next weekend. Probably Cliff or Jewell Fri night and then Gosslings on saturday to meet up with the Donahues.

Whats a good starting point?
We just got radar so Maine is now on our 'places to go list'. I've heard a lot of good things about all the islands and hope to get a trip in this year. I'm coming from the Hingham/Boston area. Can anyone suggest a good first trip spot to visit for a 4 day trip?

Christmas cove/Boothbay area. The former for a nice quiet anchorage with good resturant and walking. The latter for tourist town with lots of shopping and resturants to choose from. Make sure to stop by Seguin I. for a couple of hours. Great trails and history there.
Take some friends and sail overnight. Great offshore trip. I used to do this one as a young teenager. We would go a little further to John's Bay though.

Hingham to Isles of Shoals (about 50nm) then Isles of Shoals to Casco Bay, perhaps Jewell Island. This is about a 100nm trip give or take a few and we've done it many times..
My big summer cruise starts August 2. I won't be doing science as it turns out. The investigators would prefer fall data after the huge fresh water input we've had abates and the client for my next big project has agreed to schedule the kick off meetings so I can plan a fall science cruise.
Speaking of science cruising, the story about my May trip has been delayed until the September issue. "Points East" now puts their entire issue online so those of you outside of New England will be able to read it easily.

I've increasingly discovered that my next favorite crew to Barbara is "None of the above". She's going to be visiting friends in CA and none other close choices on the list are free so I'm going to do my first long solo cruise since I sailed an 18 foot catboat to Pleasant Bay long enough ago that the cruising guide said no information on the bay was available.
All of my cruises since returning to sailing have been rather hard charging affairs with schedules and goals. The plan this time is no plan. I'm just going to cast off the lines a week from tomorrow with no objective but to head east and be back in 20 days.

Roger, no plan is the way to go. That is our plan for the two weeks following Labor day this year. The only schedulled stop is Northeast Harbor as we will be doing an overnight race to get there starting Sep. 4th. I highly recommend this one. It is a lot of fun and setup for beginners(to racing) to easily and cheaply get involved.

You couldn't do better than inside Richmond Island at Cape Elizabeth. Anchor right here N43 32.947 W70 14.206 unless the wind is from the NE in which case you may want to stop before rounding the island and anchor on the other side of the breakwater in Richmond Harbor (you can't cross the breakwater). Watch out for one of the last working fish traps in Maine if you do go in on the western side. Be careful also of the extensive ledges to the east of the island.
This is the first good harbor that's easy to enter and always has anchoring room that you will encounter after Portsmouth. It's a favorite stop of boats hopping directly to and from Canada and the boats you see here will often have wind vanes and other signs of being serious, long distance boats.
If you need to buy anything other than ice cream, you'll have to go around to Portland. There is no water front or landing place in Cape Elizabeth other than the beach. If you want beach time, there is a nice little beach at the end of the breakwater and the long state park beach across Seal Cove which you could reach in the dinghy if you have an outboard or ar up for a long row.
If you have time after getting that far, I would continue up close to Outer Green Island and Junk of Pork where you can see unusual birds due to a nesting restoration project and then go into the harbor at Jewel Island. This is a state park with good hiking trails. You may have trouble finding an anchoring spot on a weekend but there are so many other great spots close by in Casco Bay that it won't be a tragedy.

Cool we'll look for them. We might be in Pen Bay tomorrow unless we stop somewhere along the way and decide to stay. In Boothbay right now, not really the atmosphere we wanted, but Damariscove and Christmas Cove were chuck full and we had a toddler who just needed a break. The TV & Dora DVD's are coming in real handy right about now as mom and dad are getting a nice respite and some quiet time to watch the boats passing by..
