Even seen on a pole where rope is wrapped around as a scuff cover? I would like to do that to my spinnaker pole so I don't have metal on metal when someone goofs up. I am sure there are places on the internet, but I am not even sure what the name is to google it. Thanks Ray

I don't really know what you are making reference to. Leather is often wrapped and stitched to a spinnaker pole to prevent chafe, but I don't recall rope being used except in very large (multi-strand) Turks-heads; and they are as much for yachts-man-ship, as for chafe.

Are you talking about just wrapping line around, or tying it around in half hitches?

We used a lightweight 3 ply cord that we wrapped in a series of half-hitches around railing andsuch. You can even offset the hitches into a spiral around whatever you are working on or put them into a pattern. I remember a 20+ years Boatswainmate who could put together very fancy patterns for the Admirals launch. Might be able to find some old knot books that show procedure.

Various methods involving functional protective 'rope work':
do websearch for Ringbolt Hitching, Cockscombing, overhanded grafting, underhanded grafting, etc.

Such can be found from such (out of print) sources such as Marlinspike Sailor, Ashby Book of Knots, etc.

It's called . . . the thing on Good Trades Spinnaker Pole

Ray,

You need to walk up to the almost end of the dock and look at Good Trade. She has one of those things in 1/8 inch rope wrapped to keep the boom from contacting the wire. It is easy to wrap and you just fstart by folding over a loop and wrapping over the same. at the end, you tuck the biiter end through the loop and pull from the bottom where the rope exists from under all the loops. Cut the exces. Done.

Hope this helps.
