I have a 1984 O'Day 222 that doesn't have the mast support part inside the boat that gives additional support to the mast compression. I've not been able to find one listed for sale anywhere, or been able to find a drawing from which I could have one fabracated.

Looking for info on this.

Al E.,
You're in luck! A few years ago, Rudy Nickerson of D&E Marine http://www.drmarine.com/ had asked me to get him some angles and dimensions off mine in my 1986 O'Day 222 cabin. I'm not sure if Rudy ever had some made up, but you can give him a call and check on it. At any rate, I have some pictures of mine, along with a rough sketch of it.

Thanks Joe for your help, looks like it will be simple enough to have one made. Your responce was exactly what I was looking for.

One more question, It's not real clear how the upper plate is attached. Is it just screwed in with self-taping bolts?

Hi Al,
You really can't go by my set up because I have a Kenyon stainless steel mast hinge on my cabin with wider bolt spacing. I used the same two thru bolts from the old aluminum tabernacle to attach the tension bar flange to. If you have the stock cast aluminum mast hinge on your cabin top, you would need to attach the flange to the two bolts on the Starboard side. I had changed my mast hinge years ago when I lost my mast out off of Newport RI. My original mast step had four thru bolts w/ nuts and washers. I just stayed with the two original bolts because of the flange hole set up. As long as the strut is in that general area right under the mast, it really doesn't matter. Of course, you'd want to keep the strut centered with the cabin to make it look good.

Tiller question ODay 222

I am an ODay 26 owner and just purchsed an ODay 222. The tiller is rotten, does anyone know a source for a new one?..also it seems to sit high in the cockpit...any mods to improve this?

I bought my straight tiller off Rudy, years ago.
http://www.drmarine.com/ It has two stainless steel plates on it that bolt over the rudder head as opposed to the original tiller that fits into the head. You would need to lower the pintles in order to raise the head in order to make room for the plates to bolt on to the head. Stops will also be required to keep the bottom of the tiller from rubbing the top of the transom. It's all pretty doable with basic hand tools. I like the straight tiller because it's easier to mount the pin for an Autohelm, plus mounting the hardware for my rudder blade hold up pendant line. These tillers are made up of very thick and strong laminated wood.
