I have been asked to help out a friends son who was given a O'Day 25, unknown what year. I previously owned a 23, but that was over 5 years ago and they are very different. The boat has been left in the water for some time, and there is plenty of rain water in the cabin. The motor was left attatched and sitting in salt water for a few years. I have not even attempted to operate the centerboard pendant. I suggested he gets towed to a marina and have a short haul. We can inspect the centerboard, get the bottom cleaned and painted and check the boat. He is only 22 and has very little money to play with. In addition he is going to have to find a used motor. He says he has a friend that can dive and check the centerboard, and scrub the bottom. Right now my major concern is the rigging. The Topping Lift is cut, and I am not even sure how it is connected to the boom. Also, the main sheet does not look like it has any way to be removed from the fiddle and block. It looks like the whole thing is rivited together. On my Cat 30 Mainsheet everything comes apart, and line replacement is quick and easy. Would someone have a manual they could copy and send? Ask him to think safety. Get the boat pulled, lower the mast and check standing rigging. Be there when boat is pulled and evaluate not only for crud but also for blisters.
There is a manual for the 25 somewhere on this web site. If not go to heart of O'day's web site. There is a manual on the web and there are a lot of owners of 25's on this web site.
Before you buy a new motor, have a old time mechanic evaluate what you have. Some old motors can be salvaged for a lot less than a new motor.
And new motors present him with special issues you need to be aware of!!! These boats were made in the time of 2 stroke motors. Modern 4 stoke motors weigh a lot (read a whole lot) more and require bigger motor mounts and additional reinforcements in transom. So be careful!
Old used two stokes can be had at old timey repair shops in this part of the country in the 6 to 9 hp range for 500 - 700 dollars. Also, your transom was designed for up to 15 hp which at the time weighed in less than 90 lbs. So be careful. There are stories on this forum about ripping a hole in the transom.

Main sheet attachment
There is no simple way to release the mainsheet from the traveler block . I simply used a snap shackle on the boom end .Do the upper stays have small triangular plates near the cabin top?
I have an O'DAY 25 Manual. It is an expanded version of the O'Day original rigging sheet (Rudy had those). I can mail a copy, but will need to ask for $10.00 to cover printing and postage (I'm out of work right now!). That will include scanned copies of several O'Day 25 brochures, the electrical diagram (1979 model), optional Mast-raiseing system instructions, etc.
To determine model year of the boat, check the Hull ID number on the transom, the last 2 numbers in that HIN will be the last 2 digits of the year.
I'd suggest having the outboard checked by a mechanic, it should still run even if you need to give it a good cleaning first. A new outboard will run close to $2,000-3,000..... repairs to the one on the boat should be less than $500 (might be more......but I'd have to see the OB to tell).
