When to replace the cutlass bearing

There should not be any "slop". It should not.. move, hit the side, move, hit the side, when you wiggle it.

:neutral: Agreed, there should be no movement at all, the bearing is meant to hold the shaft from all angles resulting in no slop.....

I let mine slop till about 2-3mm before replacing. Just make sure the shaft is not rubbing onto the cutlass metal.

mine is making noises and leaking like a sieve---should have been replaced long ago during previous owner's tenure but wasnt---i get to replace shaft log as a result---big haul out for formosa 41......but got it for goood price so is still worthy...lol......

Do you mean the stuffing box is leaking? The cutlass bearing does not hold water and needs it for lubrication........ To the original poster, there should be no movement as others have said and if it does move at all replace it now before you have other more expensive problems. Chuck

my shaft log is leaky , the stuffing box is frozen and the cutlass is noisey...so i get to replace all.....wooohoooo
cannot remove the packing in water at this point....will ruin the integrity--what is left of it--by attempting to turn the wrenches......tried it---now i have a big haul out in line.....goood thing i love this boat .... lol....

Replace now...If you wait too long and begin to dig into the strut, you really don't want to think of that .

Better $300 Now instead of $3,000 to replace the strut, and the cost of a new shaft. If it isn't time to pull the boat check with divers in your area. I've found one here that replaces the cutlass bearing in the water for $200 in labor fees

that is goood if ye have a strut set up----i have to have it go thru the hull...so i get to pay a lot..haul out and allll.....
