Keith,

While other types of wood should have a UV resistant finish on boats, Teak is different.

It should be allowed to get gray. If you must put something on, use only Teak or Linseed oils.

Teak is by its nature not slippery. It is an oily wood. Finishes no matter which one fail if it is good or real teak because of Teak's intrinsic oils. Real sailors put salt water on Teak.

So, mix up a bucket of salt water and splash it on.

Ed, your right, the teak could be, and probably should, be left gray, but it sure does look nice finished, and our odays have just the right amount to keep finished w.o. a great deal of trouble. I am likely to finish my teak, because with my deck repairs making the boat look kind of.....searching for the right word.....crapy, maybe a very nice finished teak would be worth the initial effort and upkeep.

that's what wife's are for, keeping the teak finished. mine went into labor with our first child while cleaning the teak on our cape dory typhoon. I made her finish the job before taking her to the hospital : )

(she was cleaning the teak, but i didn't make her wait, but it does make for a better story!)
