ODay 25: Has anyone re-rigged the keel pennant to the cockpit instead of hoisting up at the table pedestal? Is it true electric plastic conduit, well glued, is the way to go? If so how is a waterproof connection made at the pennant's entrance point into the boat?

I remember reading about someone on this forum who re-routed his centerboard pendant line to the cockpit via single sheaves and having it accessible from the cockpit. He also showed pictures of it. I had talked with Rudy of D & R Marine about the need for a wire cable on the 1975 O'Day 25, and he told me that braid line can be used in place of it. The centerboard on your boat is made of fiberglass and probably weighs about 60 lbs. I'm not certain on how the wire is connected at the centerboard. It may enter a small hole in the trailing edge of the board, and terminate with a crimped on cap in a 1" diameter hole near that edge. Some of the O'Day keel centerboards have a small sheave up inside the keel slot for the pendant line to go through and some don't. My O'Day 222 has this sheave but I'm not sure if your boat has one. The only way to really find out is to be able to look at it out of the water with the board down. My 222 has a piece of pipe that goes into the cockpit via a rubber hose for the pendant line. I think that this guy may have used cheek blocks on the side of the settee births, and led the line into the cockpit somehow. Perhaps he'll reply to your thread. Here is Rudy's site: http://www.drmarine.com/ If I was going to do re-route a pendant line, I would use a combination of stainless steel pipe and rubber hose if possible. Otherwise, I might opt for the cheek blocks. At any rate, I would use braid line in place of the wire cable. It's really hard for me to say without looking at it. One of our club members has a 1975 OD 25 keel/centerboard with the same type of set up as yours. It's been a while since I've been in his boat. Perhaps I'll get the opportunity to check his boat out again this season when I see him at the club. Good luck with that. For more info on that, call Rudy Nickerson. He may be able to tell you if it's doable. As for myself, I think that it is doable.

I have to agree with trinkka I would go with a piece of bent stainless pipe with a double braided line i can't remember the exact size we used on our O-26 but it looks almost exactly like trinkka's. there is a block in the CB pocked to lead the line aftward into a stainless pipe with a 90 degree turn to the floor of the cockpit the stainless pipe is sealed to the fiberglass CB tube with a piece of rubber hose and the same where the pipe come through the floor of the cockpit where O'day used a through-Hull fitting that the line comes through.
I have a 1975 25 and I'd love to re-route the pendant. I talked to Rudy about it and he suggested that I check out a 25 with the pendant fed to the cockpit, which unfortunatley I haven't had a chance to do.
Does anyone have a 25 with the cockpit pendant they could post some details? I'd love to get rid of the table post!

Amongst the accessories there is a closed, junction box designed for underwater use, with a removable lid and waterproof washer, secured onto the box with a couple of screws. I would replace them with SS screws. The bottom would need to be drilled for SS screws attaching it to the keel and housing a block to turn the pennant towards the cockpit via the three quarter inch tubes and hold down fixtures which are also amongst the accessories. That would be so much easier, I think, than finding someone who knows how to bend SS tubing without kinking it. (I know the latter because someone walked off with our bow rail and short of paying 500 for a new one, we tried to find a SS pipe bender. Never did!)

i don't have an oday 25 so i really can't follow what you are doing, but if you are using an electrical box under the waterline it gives me a bad feeling. have you looked at schedule 40 plastic pipe. that's pretty tough stuff and they probably come with 45s, 90s etc.

Not sure where you live, but I think I can get a SS bender here. I actually would like to get something made, but I'm struggling with it conceptually. I put it down to future modifications. Who knows, if I can get something functional, maybe the shop can just make a jig and sell them to anyone that needs them.

I had these guys do some stainless steel work for me through the years;
http://www.jj-marine.com/yachtgroup/thankyou.php They have a machine that bends the pipe. They're kind of pricey, but they do good work. They're located on the Taunton River just after Somerset Marine on the same side of the river. If you're handy with welding, a pipe bender can be made with channel iron and a hydraulic bottle jack. My youngest son built one and uses it to build small motorcycle choppers.
Schedule 40 is tough stuff, but schedule 80 is even tougher, as you know but I'd still use 1" stainless steel pipe for the project that he wants to undertake.

My thoughts, exactly. I had New England Boatworks do stuff for me in the past (Not Stainless, though) and we are really blessed to have some of the best boat builders in the world right here. Once I get an approriate design, I'm positive I can get something built, but it really has to be the highest quality.
I remember my Navy days, the guys in the maching shop would have fashioned something in Monell in about an hour. Amazing when you have to rely on your on resources what can be accomplished.

Thank you everyone. My Canadian spelling tells you where I am! So far I have been unable to find a SS bender. Yes, it would be nice to reside on the east coast. Most of our Great Lakes builders have closed shop. Thanks again. Great site.
